After reading Scotts33's post this morning, I started thinking about the Alpha Response irons. So, I decided to go out to the course and hit balls today instead of tomorrow or Sunday, and take a couple of the Alpha's along.
The grass on the range was a little long due to all the rain we've been getting lately, so that factored into things.....
I hit the Alpha 7 iron vs. my Adams Idea a12 7 iron. I hit 10 shots with each club, trying to take care to line up each
shot on a target and put my best swings on each shot, not trying to hit it 'machine gun style.' The biggest difference
between the two clubs, IMO, is the wider sole on the Adams a12's. Offset is about the same, both have 55 gram senior graphite shafts, 1.5 inches longer than standard and the same grips. So, a pretty good comparison.
I felt that I hit both clubs pretty much the same..... a couple of fat shots with each (one of my typical misses), but most of them were solid shots. Hard to tell, but I think they both carried about the same distance. The Alphas look a little better at address, IMO, with a slightly thinner topline and a slightly shorter blade length. Long story short, I think I will keep using the Adams right now while the conditions of the courses are still spring-like, softer, fairways longer, etc.... When summer weather comes and course maintanence catches up with the weather, I may want to switch to the Alphas, due to the slightly narrower sole allowing me to make better, crisper contact. I'll give it another look in about a month....
