In Honor of Si Woo Kim: Your Broken Club Story

This tweet from the great work @azgreg is doing in The Masters thread made me wonder about the time(s) you broke a club...intentionally, and heck unintentionally? We know @Typhoon broke a new Cally earlier today. 😂

What club did you break and how/why did you break it?

For me, I broke a Mac Burrow Power Sphere 3 wood...twice. Head flew about a hundred yards. Man did that thing fly. Had it fixed at a golf shop and thing flew off again.

Toulon Back in the day, I wrapped my favorite 2 wood around a tree. Head nearly decapitated me in the process. Last broken club ever. Lesson learned.

Prior to that, no clubs were broken, but 1 by 1 they were 'Pied Pipered' into various ponds on courses.
Then, I bought a new set. 😆

I have caved/cracked the face on 10+ driver and snapped the shafts of others, but not intentionally. I did pull a 9 iron slam after shanking it so bad on a par 3 I couldn’t believe it and that lead to a new shaft. The funniest version was a 3 wood I never got a long with, had a good round going, hit it to be "safe" yanked it and promptly just let it go in the follow through, sending it about 30ft up in a tree. It lived there for the summer and came down with the leaves. Sure enough, it got returned to me, I left it in the trunk of a car when I sold it, had to be rid of that thing.

Only club I have broken was not intentional. My 2003 OMG Topflite Tour 9 iron head went flying into the range. That event led to me looking into fixing a golf club. Shortly after I was signed up for a club building class at Golfsmith. After taking that class I hoped on the internet to learn more. The internet led me to a site called Free Golf Info .com. So thanks to that broken club I now have a whole new set of friends. And Spuzz.😁

Can't say I've ever broken a club....but have slammed one against my bag after a bad shot, causing a hole.... does that count?

In honor of Si Woo....I've forgotten putter and used a wood to putt vs the bellied wedge. Much easier IMO. I see that method just off the green moreso than the bellied wedge. His ball striking held up and he had easy 2 putts into the house... could've gotten ugly otherwise!

I've never thrown a club let alone break a club in anger. Played with a guy who tossed his wedge in the swamp next to hole number 3 at Fox Hollow.

Still there. No one wanted to risk it with the poisonous snakes and gators. Had another guy throw his club and it got stuck in a tree. We were able to retrieve that one.

Good advice from Tommy Bolt. Always throw a club in front of you and not behind you. 😉

Unintentional. I noticed on the first tee once that my 3 wood didn't seem right. I used it on the first tee and then noticed the shaft alignment was off. I then played with no FW woods and did well actually.

Nothing intentional. I broke a driver shaft once by leaning on it a little as I bent down to tee up a ball. Had a friend that mishit a 3 wood and then swung it in anger striking the ground hard and bending the metal shaft. The same guy hit a poor shot on a par 3 in a different round. Went to throw his 6 iron (I believe he was actually trying to follow Tommy Bolt's advice posted above), and somehow he didn't release it immediately or the grip stuck a little to his glove. The club flew over his shoulder and about 20 yards into the pond directly behind the tee box.

Si Woo Kim played some impressive golf the last 3 holes considering that he had lost his temper and putted with a fairway wood in that stretch.

I was playing in a Pro-Am at Firethorn in Nebraska with 3 friends with the entry covered by an old boss that was a tournament sponsor. Firethorn is a Pete Dye design with hole #8 an island green with railroad ties surrounding 3 sides. I hit my approach and the ball landed next to the pin but it spun back very close to the ties, still on the green but against the apron. There wasn't much room to get behind the ball, mark it, and get a read on the 20 footer remaining. I get behind the ball (gingerly), place the putter against my thigh, leaned over to spot the ball, and the putter slipped off. The middle of the shaft hits the railroad tie causing the club to flip into its deep, watery grave. I then had to take the walk of shame back to the cart to get a 3 iron that I then putted with and used during the remaining 10 holes. I made a visit to some local golf store to buy a replacement for Day 2. The cocktail reception that evening wasn't much fun with all the Laughing Hyenas slapping my back when my fateful story made the rounds.

Not intentionally. But last year the head of my i500 8 iron flew off into the lake. I needed that club on the next par 3, but had to use 1 less club......made a Hole In One!

Ping did replace the club and reshafted the rest of the irons gratus. When I got them back I Promptly sold them...

One time. Slammed a TM200 4i against the ground on anger. Steel shaft snapped about 5" above the hosel. Glad I was alone. Started reading Bob Rotella and that changed everything.

I have never intentionally broken any clubs.
Never broke an iron but I did try once with my PW by doing a long helicopter toss towards the green.
It landed softly in a bunker lol
I have broken a few shafts though.
A few on the range trying to find out how hard I could swing. Broke one on my back once. That one let a a mark 😮
I also broke a driver shaft on the first tee once, at an expensive course. Had to play the rest of the day with 3 wood.
Never again. I pay to play.
I carry an extra driver in my bag from that day on (over 15 years now) and I haven't given a rat's ass what anyone has to say about since then and never will. If you are a Rules Guy, don't look in there. LOL

As I get older my distance has really dropped. I can't throw a club near as far as I used to. In my day I could helicopter an iron as well as anyone but never broke one. Well, I did break one. I flipped an iron up in the air maybe 5' feet from me. It hit right on the grip cap and kind of vibrated then I heard a "ping" and the steel shaft just snapped. Weird.

Who was it that said, "I never buy a set of clubs unless I have had the chance to throw them first."

I played a two man best ball with my buddy against two cocky members of a private club (we were invites) and after 9 holes, we won 8 holes and tied one. After I eagled the Par 5 10th, one of them tossed his putter back at the cart and it slide upright along the cart path, making some sparks until it hit his bag.
After I made my second eagle on the back (hole out on a Par 5) , the same guy threw his 5 wood into a tall pine tree and it never came down. It was the most impressive axe throw I have ever seen. Might still be there.

I've had a couple of heads come off at the range, but never on the course.

As a teenager, I did throw a club and the shaft got a curve in it. I tried to straighten it and it kinked,

While I never threw many clubs, I decided years ago that if I was going to do that, I wasn't going to play gold.
