I played a 48" driver for 6-7 years at least. It was a Peerless titanium head, the head made for them by Ruger arms, smaller than today's heads. Probably about 270 in size and normal weight. I tried several shafts and then tried a big butt shaft and it was golden for me. In retrospect I believe this shaft balanced the club where I could really feel the head and because the grip was simply a wrap of thin leather it was not over weight in total weight. I never weighed it compared to my previous driver, but I always felt the total weight was slightly lighter than my previous driver at the time.
I did practice with it a couple of times before I took it to the course. But, from that first round till when I finally damaged the shaft in transport I just never thought of replacing it. I tried to find the same shaft and then the same style shaft, but I felt the shaft ran contrary to the big grip companies and never got strong support. I felt the key to my success with that driver was the "big butt" shaft. I later tried a couple of longer shafts with the same head. Did not work for me. With a regular tapered shaft and conventional grip I settled in at 46 inches, but I tend to grip down about 1/2 inch from the end of the butt.
Personally, I was more accurate with that driver and gained considerable distance. It was the reason I got a lot of invites for scramble teams at the time. I won quite a few long drives in scrambles with that driver. My daughter got her first "big screen TV," which she still remembers when I took it over to her apartment. Wife and I had bought one a few months earlier.
I always felt it was a good fit for me because I played a lot of baseball in my early years. Flatter swing and really fit my natural swing.
