pike51 Many years ago when even a 5 wood was considered a "sissy" club I built and carried 3, 5, 7, and 9 woods. I mainly used the Super Concord heads and some Integra Super Sooolong heads. I hit them very well but as hybrid technology improved I slowly gravitated toward them and the higher lofted fairway heads went to the time out closet. Now at age 71 I am really seeing a distance drop in my longer irons and inability to hit them consistently and my distance has dropped. I now have a big distance gap between my longest iron (6 or 7) and my 5 wood. I don't hit the 3 wood well anymore either. So this springs game plan is to bring back the old Super Concord heads and add in some higher lofted fairways. I have the SC's in up to a 15 wood. I bought some new filament wound shafts to reshaft them.
Something to note about trimming higher lofted fairways is the head weight usually get heavier for each higher lofted head. However, the trim charts for the shafts I have a 1/2" tipping progression starting with the three wood at 1.5", the five at 2.0" and the seven at 2.5". For any higher lofts and heaver heads it recommends tipping them all at 2.5" like the seven wood. They do recommend butt trimming them in a 1/2" shorter slope i.e. 9w 1/2" than the 7 and so on.
So much depends on he head weights and the tip trimming recommendations of the particular shafts. I don't know about the Icon but I built a set of fairways for a bud many years ago using the Merc Performance shafts. My notes show that I tip trimmed the 7 and 9 woods 2.5".
