Converting a Sun Mountain Speed cart

A buddy of mine didn't bring his push cart the other day because his cart's tires won't hold air anymore. So, since the course didn't have enough carts when we teed off, he ended up carrying his bag and was totally beat at the end of the round.

They sell kits for $86 to replace the wheels with solid foam ones, but I was wondering if anyone has found any other wheels from Home Depot, Lowes or Harbor Freight that would work instead for less $$.

I did see some wheels that Lowes had with a 1/2" diameter bore and 2 1/2" hub length for $15 each.

SVonhof He can get new tires and tubes for around $60 + shipping of course.

Look at anyplace that might sell wheels and tires for handcarts, or moving dolly's. Lowe's, Home Depot, tractor supply, even your local farm supply store might have something you like.

I wondered about spray foam, but was concerned that it would not hold up well.

There are actually foam fill kits just for this.

SVonhof I think I would look for a flexible foam in strip form. You could pull the tire and put the foam inside and pack it in as tight as possible inside the tire and probably some sticky backed foam strip for the wheels.

I put tire heavy duty tubes in my Sun Mountain Push cart tires. Cheap solution. They held air after that....no issues.

I am calling BS on using Great Foam. It hardens like a rock. I am sure there are other products to do this that maintain some flexibility. I had a cart that we used to haul stuff from the marina to our boat that had 20" tube tires. I got so tired of these going flat that I found some replacement airless tires. Not cheap but had the same flex as a tube tire and no more worries. I would just get the airless replacement tires and be done with it. You don't want rock hard wheels from some jack leg DIY attempt.

They put the pneumatic tires on for a reason. The carts push smoother and don't bounce on every little bump they roll over. Same reason they don't put solid tires on bicycles, baby strollers or cars.

Drop the clubs you can't/don't use put 'em in a Sunday bag and play golf walking/carrying 6-8 clubs. You'll score the same. ☺

Rickochet True, but after a while ClicGear switched from pneumatic to non-pneumatic. Prolly because there were problems with the air tires. Not having to worry about checking air pressure is a big plus, and for the application of pulling a golf bag around a golf course the non-pneumatic tire is comfortable enough and more reliable.

Don't get hung up on the word pneumatic. I was mainly trying to differentiate between hard ass solid wheels and softer ones. I doubt the ClicGear are hard ass tires. I mentioned that I replace some pneumatic tires on a dock cart with airless ones. They had the same feel as the ones with air but won't go flat.

By pneumatic I was referring to tires that are inflated with air. There are newer "airless" tires that are a foam compound that simulates the "ride" of a tire with air in it. I checked into these for my golf cart but they are pricey.
