Tip Trimming For High Lofted Fairway Heads Question

I am reshafting a set of Super Concord fairway heads. I have some filament wound shafts for them and the trim chart shows tipping 1" on driver then another 1/2" for each fairway head up to 2 1/2" for the #7 and the same for #9. The issue is that I also have the #11, #13 #15. The chart stops at the #9 recommendation. I called the vendor and was told to tip trim the others 2 1/2" like the #7 and #9" and butt trim them progressively 1/2" shorter.

What concerns me is that the heads progressively get 4g heavier and the #15 is 16g heavier than the the #7. So, they recommend trip trimming the 222g #7 and the #15" 238g head the same but make the #15 2" shorter than the #7.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

If you trim more than the max recommended amount you will probably run out of parallel shaft. I've done what you are doing and followed shaft Mfg tip trim instructions. Just butt trim as they suggest by 1/2" increments and clubs will play as intended.

I measured the PTS on the shafts and there is plenty to do more progressive 1/2" trims. My issue is I am not sure I got the Mfg. trim instructions and there may not be any for woods beyond a 9. The lady that answered the phone just quoted what the website said, I think, since she was hard to understand and borderline rude.

...something like....no need to tip todays graphite shafts, they just publish tip trim instructions to stop people from calling in and asking for them.

I think that was for Mercury shafts.

the example he used for the prevent phone call thing was a big brand shaft company , may have been Aldila

I have a few quotes of his on this ( and others on an old pc ) but basically he said all graphite shafts are tip stable enough now that tipping isn't needed.

My understanding was because he did not post a trim chart for Mercury shafts one was created to keep people from bugging him about tip trimming. Not worth quibbling over. Back to topic.

Weirfan I never tip shafts for woods/hybrids. I figure if the extra weight is going make the ballflight higher, it's a good thing, considering I'm doing that for clubs that I want to launch higher anyway.

Much depends on the characteristics of each shaft and my concern with too much flexibility is that it might increase flight height but if it has a higher recovery rate on the downswing it can turn it into a left yank machine. The old Accuflex VS339 was for me the biggest example of that.

Might depend on where the spine is on the sheet wrapped ones. 😉
