More so retired because of wife's career than anything I've ever worked toward. I piddled around working odd and end jobs the past two decades, nothing meaningful regarding retirement, etc. since we made the decision way back to have me stay home and play Mr. Mom while momma went out and earned an executive salary. I worked, don't get me wrong... raising kids, cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc... its just that my "compensation" was being able to raise our own kids versus farming them out to childcare just so I could spend half of my salary paying someone else to do it.
I've not regretted it, but it certainly forced us to be frugal with our money. The upside, however, is that we eventually got into a situation where we could pay off all our debt over time and now everything we own is paid for, but again - health insurance is definitely a new "mortgage payment" for us now. And we would make out okay if I decided to do nothing, we're not in dire straits. We have been blessed to be able to continue giving to our local charities and causes, and we enjoy a pretty comfortable life.
I just don't see myself ever getting back into the full-time golf lifestyle like I once was, which costs a lot of money in itself, and I would prefer being able to pay our way without robbing our retirement account.
Appreciate all of the input, especially the posts above that specifically question the tax stuff, licensing in different states, etc.
Lots to consider, for sure.
