Just to make it easier for you ...

Most men who miss the cut are pretty disheartened/disgusted with their game that week.

Pretty sure every Hall of Fame player has missed a cut at some point ... i.e. not shitty players. How many of them celebrated missing the cut at the Shriner's by a couple strokes? If you want to celebrate Lexi's "achievement", feel free to. Different strokes and all that. I felt the same way when Billie Jean King defeated an old/washed up Bobby Riggs ... it was never a "battle of the sexes". He beat Margaret Court on a slow surface, and lost to Billie Jean King on a fast one. All it came down to was the age of his legs versus hers, lol.

Note: distance at a 7,300 course (at 2,500ft elevation) would not have been an issue for me. Keeping it in the zip code would have been.

Not sure I understand it, either, but breaking for on a course that long is actually pretty amazing. I am also a Lexi fan and really wish she would not have lost that US Open a few years back.

Part of the reason (I think) for the tournament extending the invitation to Thompson will have been to draw attention to the tournament - going by the posts from the last few days, that seems to have succeeded, in this company at least. (She also showed that, with her score and level of play, she was more deserving of her place in the field than previous 'celebrity' invitiations to Tour events - Tony Romo is the one that immediately comes to mind, but there will have been others.)

Bobby Riggs was a con man. The word for years was that he bet a million dollars on himself to lose. That wouldn't surprise me.

I would think anyone who has a daughter might think it’s pretty cool to see a woman compete against the men straight up at the highest level and do well.

I don't think it was. She beat a retired old male player when she was the top female player in the world. Just as it meant nothing when Riggs beat Margaret Court before that.
The 200th ranked men's player beat both Serena and Venus Williams 6-1, 6-0 in the same day while fooling around hitting trick shots. Even Serena is on record saying she has no chance against a male pro. I don't know why we can't just admire female and male athletes for who they are and not try to come up with false victories.

John McEnroe has said similar things regarding women playing men. And he’s right. Tennis is more of a power game that golf though.

Lexi is long in the women’s game, but her power deficiency isn’t as great playing against men as it is for women in tennis.

There was a good movie a few years ago (2017) where Emma Stone played King and Steve Carell played Riggs. Battle of the Sexes.👍

Sneakylong You can cut and paste the same stuff as many times as you want but I still want to know how that match legitimized women's tennis? I agree with King's comment that had she lost it would have set women's tennis back 50 years because she would have lost to a washed up former pro. But beating that washed up former pro does nothing to legitimize women's tennis. She proved the best woman tennis player of the time could beat an old man.
I still wonder about Riggs betting a million on himself to lose. He handled Margaret Court rather easily and she was a great player at the time. Seems a little fishy that it turned around so much, but even if it was all legit it proves nothing about women's tennis.

Bobby Riggs may have wagered on the match. He was a big gambler.

I was 18 in 1973. This was a huge match on TV (30 million viewers). Kind of the equivalent of Evil Knivel jumping the canyon on a rocket. Lol. Huge TV ratings.

Watched both (1973 and 1974). Huge hype for both. TV options back then were limited as we know. The canyon jump was just a little more dangerous. Lol

Not many have a huge hit song by Elton John written about them. She was huge back then. Fought hard for women’s tennis. Champion, Activist and a Legend. Quite a legacy.😉

Yup, she was ranked higher than Billie Jean. But he played her on a slow surface where she couldn't run him around and hit winners like BJK did.

I think the "million" rumor is untrue. For one, I doubt Bobby had access to a million to put up ... plus, it was the amount that Jimmy Connors admittedly bet on himself to not lose more than 8 games against Martina Navratilova (after being handicapped half the doubles alleys and only allowed one serve). With Riggs, the story I always heard was that he made the deal to lose - with the mob, with whom there is no question he had ties, to erase his debts.
