As I start to get a little more fever to get back to playing after a 7 year layoff, I'm starting to think about golf-related issues.
As a youngster, I was a magnificent putter. Now, that I'm older, it's the worst part of my game.
Back in the day, it seemed that a ball was either 90 or 100 compression. Most were 90, and every once in awhile you'd find a 110 thrown in. (I was an avid golf ball hunter years ago)
Just the other night I was wondering about compression of golf balls today, vs. yesteryear. It was intersting for me to see that the balls I enjoy playing today were all in the 70 to mid 80 range as far as compression. When I could really putt it, I was using almost 90 compression balls, exclusively.
Could that explain the loss of touch with the putter? I've never had even a single round or practice green session that felt remotely close to the way I used to roll it. I'm wondering if a softer ball is killing my putting? Or, if I just suck now when I used to be so good at it? I was on the course every single day way back when, and now it was sporadic when I was playing, but I've just never had that confidence I used to have with the putter.
Does ball compression matter to you when putting?
