It likely comes down to whether or not the player and caddie use the laser on top of everything they do now or as a substitute to some of those things. If they don't forgo some of the existing routine then it is an extra step. Hopefully, it results in less pacing off and less referring to the book although It would be natural for that transition to be gradual and take a bit of time. Golfers more than most athletes are creatures of routine and habit. I can see some players/caddies not making the change at all and others jumping right in. Hopefully, they allow the slope function as well to reduce the mental calculations some ponder over now.
in the end the player has 40 seconds ( not including the special provisions) to make his shot so that timeframe still governs what they do. Of course the PGA has to enforce that
