Biggest Factor In Putter You Game

As a guy who's owned well over 100 putters, I've come to a conclusion about what is the differentiating factor about what makes a putter work for me.

Would love to hear what it is that works for you. Is it length, weight, head style, putter shaft, grip, type of material, etc.?

For me, it's about what the putter is made from. I recall a JAS Anser I owned. I don't like the Anser head style. Had nothing but issues with that head style over the years. With the JAS Anser it was completely different. I LOVED that thing and shouldn't have ho'd it but that's what ho's do.

That feel that comes from a certain type of metal is everything to me. Brass is another metal that I enjoy the feel of. Used to have an old Northwestern Napa putter that I was lights out with. Cheapest looking thing ever, but had a feel like few others. Not sure what it was made out of but I want to say aluminum. It was light as air. Tried many Napas made out of many metals and didn't like any of them.

So, for me, it isn't blade or mallet, it's metal composition. What is it for you?

That's the cat's pajamas for me now.

The only insert putter I liked was a Taylor Made Nubbins B5 slant shaft style before I went to #9 style.
Stealth putter I called it. I still have it and dust it off occasionally for kicks.

Putter "material" has never been near the top of the "must have" list for me.

I've probably only had 4 putters I 'left in the bag', in my life. I've built a few cheapies, bought a few name brands, but always got rid of them after a try, as they were only 'curiosities' for me. Length, weight, shaft material, etc. has never been anything I've been finicky about. 1 of those 4 putters was a $1 pick up at the Salvation Army store, an old brass Austad's. I changed out the shaft/grip, took it right out on course and holed the putts on the 1st several holes in a row. I kept it in the bag for a few years; still have it. I've been able to putt well with any putter, so it's never mattered to me what the club looked like or who made it, design, weight, face material, etc.. Hell, I have no clue what my putter now even weighs! I do have a LogicalOne that I'm putting in the bag this Spring. From what I'm feeling in it just by swinging it in the basement, it may well replace my Ping I've had for 10+ yrs.. Time will tell.

Or, maybe I'll buy me a Scotty tomorrow. 😲 Be "somebody".

Ha! I can't resist sharing this short story.

Scotty Cameron evokes much negative reaction. The pretentionsness of it all really gets to me. Now, I know a few people who have them that aren't that way at all, but usually there's an air about someone who loves talking about their Scotty.

One of the last rounds I played was with some old dear friends and a guy they were friends with but I wasn't. He was Mick Tinglehoff's son, the old Viking Hall of Famer. So, naturally, I thought this guy was going to be a dick. He was the exact opposite and should've known that given the type of people my life long friends are.

Anyway, he was gaming a Scotty. Putted quite well with it although the rest of his game wasn't great.. I couldn't resist so I asked him if I could try his putter. He graciously handed his baby over to me, and I putted ONE ball, and gave it back to him. That one putt was tremendous. I remember thinking maybe there is something to the aura, after all.

In the end, I don't really know, it was only one putt, but I have fond memories of that putter.

I have generally had 3 putters in my bag over the last 40+ years of golfing. An Arnold Palmer Blade, Ping Anser, and my current gamer, Tour Odyssey Black (I forget the number, Ping B60ish style). The AP gets pulled out if my putting goes way off, and I have always loved it on lightning quick greens. Firm up the wrists, take a normal stroke, and hot that ball off the toe to deaden it works very well.

I probably have a 15-20 more in my mothers basement, either experiments or my dad's old putters that I never liked (The Anser and AP were his).

Oh, I did forget one putter I used for about 5 years, a golfworks putter (can't remember the model, it was an Anser style with the black aluminum insert that also comprised of the hosel). Built that sucker at 32 inches with a backweight and did very well with it, but age determined I didn't want to bend over to that degree...lol

For me, it is 'feel' and distance control. As long as it is fit my 'slight arc' putting stroke.

I tried a Tour Odyssey Black #1W years ago and liked it so much, I finally acquired a back up.
I have access to almost any of the higher end putters and it kicks their butts. Probably never
leave the bag. No insert, milled metal, flo neck blade. 😍

Head style 1st. LOVE the curved full mallet. Odyssey VLine and CAG 34FIVE are my favorite and I actually don't ho putters much. Odyssey in VA and CAG in Florida.

I really like the look of that CAG. How does it feel compared to the Odyssey? From the pics it looks to me like the insert is metal, which I've generally preferred over polymer ones like the OG white hot which I didn't like. I was considering one of the Stroke Lab V-line putters with the micro hinge but I'm worried about the insert.

All about the alignment marks for me. I prefer a semi mallet to full mallet. Half Shaft offset if I can get it.

Reminds me --- putter fittings are definitely recommended. I had one some years ago and it was
eye opening (no pun intended ). I'm sure the fittings are much better now with advanced technology
but with an experienced fitter I'd do it again. Misaligned optics, ineffective tendencies and identification
of appropriate putter styles are recommended. Hmmm, I may do it again. 🤔

Majority of golfers are misaligned. If you are a decent green reader but can't align correctly have reasonable putter technique....anything you make over 6' is just a mistake. ☺

I have 5 putters, and they all have SOME of the features that I like, but NONE has everything I'm looking for. My perfect putter would be:

a Mallet, the shape of the old Zebra or Rossie 2
Painted black w/ White alignment lines
Face balanced/double bend shaft with 1/2 shaft offset
Face milled

Of my five putters, the Rossie II and my 2 Zebras come the closest to meeting all of my criteria. Oh yeah....since
I'm a cheap bastage, I won't pay more than $50 bucks for a putter either! My current gamer, the Rossie, cost
$10 bucks at PIAS!

I just want a putter that puts a smooth roll on the ball. I prefer half-mallets, generally, b the wldmuse anything that has a smooth feel. Can't stand a tinny feel or a really light putter. Don't care about alignment marks at all. If the face if the putter is flat, I can line up a putt.

Face balanced. Has to be. Centre shafted. Prefer a mallet but the Heavy putter I started gaming last year works well. Looking forward to the odessey strokes I am getting from cutter. Oh and no more than 34". Big grip too.

I think if I had to choose I would have to go with a mallet style. I like the longer alignment lines. Current gamer for a couple years is a Scotty Red X mallet. I got it from a garage sale for $5 because the lady didn't know where her husband was and quoted me a price! I still can't make squat at my home course, but I make more with it then without it.

I have 3 putters. In order that I putt best with.
1- older odyssey 2 ball blade white hot
2-TM spider tour black
3- Scotty Newport select
scotty feels great looks great but I seem to ever make shit with this thing. It’s Anser style head maybe just not my jam

I currently have only one putter. An older Odyssey dual force mallet. I'd like to try one of those backstryke putters Odyssey made.

A putter that I can pick up my ball with........and a putter that flies less than 20 yards when thrown.

Been using an Odyssey 7S Works Black for a few years now. I like the sightline this shape provides and it has the slant neck for some toe hang. 34" and it has a 50g backweight with SS Flatso 1.0 grip. The only thing I don't like about this putter is the insert so I'm considering shelling out the dough for the Toulon Las Vegas version. I've never been a fan of inserts although the microhinge face really does get the ball rolling. I swear I've had many putts go in that should have been short lol.
