Buddy of mine won a stay and play at a private course in northern Michigan for 4. Nice course, I played for crap 87-86. That's not the story though.
But here's the story. I drive up with my friend and the other two guys are leaving later. So we get there right about 9pm just getting dark. Pull up to a gate and get buzzed in. Drive down to the main hotel/lodge. The place was built in 1926 and looks like something out of "Dirty Dancing" or the Poconos. It's in the middle of nowhere. Spotty cell service.
Not a car in the lot. We go in and a security guard is waiting and gives us both room keys and then promptly leaves. We realize we are totally alone, no staff, no guests just us?We get to our rooms which are down this long dimly lit hall that looks like something out of the Shining. Open the door and my first thought was this looks like a prison cell. Painted cinder block walls with two beds. No TV, like WTF?
I tell my buddy "You know we're going to die here tonight, right?" I mean this is the perfect plot of a horror movie, people are lured to an isolated mansion with the hope of a unknown inheritance , only to be picked off one by one, except we were lured by free golf. I text my wife, "If you don't hear from me tomorrow , it's probably too late, but send help".
So we walk around the common area a bit and the place is actually quite nice. Lots of sofas, chairs , big screen TV. Huge deck overlooking a large lake. Great sunset. I still think we're dying tonight though, but at least we have a nice view.
The other guys show up and we say our goodbyes. We go to bed and sleep with one eye open.
Morning comes and we're still alive! Maybe this place is legit. Still no sign of other humans though. About 8am a couple workers show up. We go play golf and when we get back there's a few people around. Turns out to be a really nice place (minus the rooms) and we have a great time. Just a bizarre start to the trip.
