Had the opportunity to play a beautiful resort course yesterday, the Plantation Course at Kingsmill in Williamsburg, VA. Nice weather. Grass is all dormant Bermuda, so all lies in the fairway were tight. They had aerated and sanded the greens maybe a week ago, so they weren't perfect, but putted truer than they looked.
Tiny greens, for the most part, and with lots of slopes. The larger greens were tiered and tricky.
It was a competition of sorts, with six guys from the Williamsburg area against six from the Tidewater area, divided roughly by skill into two good, two pretty good, and two not so good. We played two-man scramble, stroke play.
The good player match was all square. In my match, we beat them by five shots. Sadly, we lost the last match by six, so our team lost by one shot! (My partner and I missed a tough little four-foot putt on the thirteenth hole or we would have tiedπ€¨π€¦ββοΈ. )
I played pretty well. Drives were fading a little, which islnot my usual shot pattern, but it worked well because all the doglegs but one went right. Occasionally one would go too far right, though. Irons were pretty good all day, especially the mid- and short-irons, which is how we won our march by five shots. With the small greens, direction and distance with iron shots were at a premium.
I definitely could have played better, and our team should have won, but it was a fun day on the course. In about five months, we will have a second match, and this time we will play a down here, and they can travel.
