Had the unexpected confluence of time off from work and beautiful weather, so I headed to our local muni to play 9. It was crazy crowded, as you can imagine; we don't get that many 65-degree days in late December and when pretty much everybody is off work.
The round started with a horrible shot but ended with an absolutely fantastic one. I missed the first fairway wide right by about 40 yards.
On the 9th hole I had 82 yards for my approach shot, uphill, with a left-to-right wind. I had been hitting a little draw witu my irons all day, and I thought that the wind and my little draw might offset about perfectly, so I took aim at the flag with my A wedge.
I hit it solidly and right on line. I said 'be the right club.' I saw the ball land very close to the hole and i thought I was going to have a tap-in birdie. Well, I wasn't sure, but it looked like the ball was still moving and it looked like it was less than a couple of inches away. At that point, I said 'Go in the hole!,' but not expecting that it actually would, but then the ball just disappeared into the bottom of the cup for eagle!
I have been playing golf for 54 years and today was the very first time that has happened for me! I was extremely excited.
It was also my second eagle of the year; I made a one-putt eagle at a short par four in Utah in September.
