Gleneagles Queen's Course. I played there many years ago and thought it a short, very playable, layout. Either my memory was wrong or I've lost a LOT of distance since. It's a feckin monster. A lovely looking, well laid out, well manicured monster.
With a 730am teee time and a spit of rain just before we set off we got to watch the sun come up and the clouds break to the point the rain jacket went back in the bag; it was a little chilly with quite a strong breeze but it's Scotland, end September, get on with it.
Wish I'd paid as much attention to my golf as I did the conditions and scenery as the front 9 chewed me up and spat me out, not helped by me using a TaylorMade Sandmagnet Special. The bunkers (greenside and fairway) were heavy going due to yesterday's rain and very difficult to get out of. Thankfully it was Stableford so no need to keep hacking at it. 10 points - and lucky to get to double figures π€£ I can't recall a better ball striking round (excludes directional input) ending in such a miserable score, while enjoying a round so much.
Back 9 started OK although a lost ball on #11 wasn't cool, bogey on #12, then par-par-par-par-bogey-par finish ... WHAT? Where did that come from? Oh yeah ... I probably woke up around 11am ... I'm not a morning person π 18 points back 9 for 28 overall. Not great but as I said earlier, a fantastic day out. Big ups to our playing companions on the day, both of whom struggled to score, but nobody got down on themselves or anyone else, and they gave as good as they got in the chatter stakes.
And to top it all, met two former work colleagues, both of whom took the same path as me - redundancy straight to retirement. One of them used his payout to join Gleneagles, says he'll give it a year at least and see whether he carries it on afterward. Sadly more of a work colleague than a friend so I'm not expecting an invite from him anytime soon.
