My buddy and I won our club's Fall Shootout this weekend! Any win is good, but this is one of the big tournaments that pays well. The first 18 holes are quota where you take 36 minus your handicap and that's the number of points you need to shoot for. Eagle is 8, birdie 4, par 2 and bogey is worth 1. Usually if you get to zero you have a shot at getting in the shootout
This is usually a good format for the high cappers since you need less points. The top 10 teams get into the shootout which is true alternate shot for 9 holes. We won this in 2018, but haven't made a shootout since. He's a 23 and I'm a 14 and I made 23 points and he made 16 which netted us +4 and 4th place. Only the top 3 paid out, but we made up for that later.
I actually placed a bet on the team that won the qualifier at +11 and won. Since we had extra cash, we bought our team outright for the Shootout. Sadly we got bid up a bit since the Pro pointed out we won this event 3 years ago, but obviously it was worth it in the end.
Last time we won, I really came through in the alternate shot, but this time I was a bit shaky and my buddy did the heavy lifting. We also got lucky on some holes where our opponents gagged it up. I hate alternate shot, but the shootout is just about not being the worst score on a hole. I thought I blew it for us on #11 (we played the back), but we survived and I piped drives on 12 and 14 and I hit a great flop on 16 and a spectacular hook out of and around the trees on 17 to keep us in it. I also hit a nice drive on 18. I thought I blew it missing the birdie putt, but our opponents 3-jacked to give it to us. Shocking as the first guy to putt is a 1 handicap and his partner is about an 8. Probably no way we win a chipoff against them. I've honestly felt like I've had more bad luck than good on the golf course lately, but not this weekend.
