Got off work early enough to get in nine holes at the local muni.
You know how sometimes you don't hit the ball very well but your score is pretty good? Well, today was the exact opposite. I feel like I hit the ball pretty well but got some crazy bad breaks and couldn't score worth crap.
Parred the first hole. It was pretty windy. On the second hole I hit 5-wood off the tee. I hit it pretty solid, just a few yards left of my intended target, but it got held up in the wind and ended up in a pretty bad position about two inches into a bunker with a lip, making it impossible for me to get to the green. If the ball had gone one yard further it would have gone down a hill and been in perfect position 20 yards ahead of where it ended up, which would have made for a simple approach.
On the fifth hole I hit a solid six iron approach that drifted maybe two yards or three yards right and got held up in the wind, which made it bound down a hill into a water hazard. But the shot felt good and had a good trajectory. It wasn't a bad shot, but it led to a double.
On seven I hit what I thought was a great five wood off the tee. Had it been one yard longer or two yards further left, it would have left me a PW into the green. As it was, it ended up barely into a deep bunker, and I had to try to hit out of it standing out of the bunker with the ball about eight inches below my feet. I got the ball out and hit it toward the green, but it bounded down a hill to a watery grave. Again, I felt like my tee shot was actually better than most i have hit on that hole. In fact, my usual five wood off that hole, even if on that same line, would end up short of the bunker.
The consolation is that I played the last four holes one over despite the bad break water penalty on seven. And I guess I feel better today, hitting the ball well but with a couple of bad breaks, than I did on Friday morning, when I scored pretty well but hit a number of really bad shots.
It is a crazy game.
