Eguller The Hinkle Tree...!
Planted at Inverness Club in Toledo between the first and second round of the 1979 US Open held there. Hinkle
and one or two other pros had taken a short cut into a parallel fairway to get to the green of the par 5 8th hole
with a drive and an iron.
As you can see, the tree didn't stop him....he persisted in the other rounds. The tree finally met its demise
a couple of years ago when the club engaged in a tree-cutting program as part of renovation of the course....
BTW, the guy looking up at the tree in the first picture....? The late Mike Strantz, who later became a fairly well
known golf course architect himself (Tobacco Road, Royal New Kent, Stonehouse, Bulls Bay, Caledonia, and others). I first knew him as a high school kid when we worked together at the little old country golf course I still call home.
