Question About Soft Stepping Ping KT-M Shafts In Some Eye 2+

I bought a set of Ping Eye 2+ 3 - SW with KT-M stiff shafts. I was planning on pulling the shafts, reaming them and installing FST 115 shafts like I did on my set of Eye 2's. All the shafts are in good shape as are the labels. These will be for my use so I need to back off to a softer flex as I am tipping my FST's for a senior flex and playing them at longer lengths. After pulling the SW head the thought of soft stepping them occurred to me. I only plan on using the 7 thru SW. The 3i has a graphite in it so I could soft step them twice putting the 4 in the 7, 5 in the 8 on down until the 8 goes to the SW. I don't know how Ping tip trims the shafts before tapering them so I guess the SW might only be soft stepped once. Anyhoo, I have zero knowledge on how these shafts play normally or if soft stepped. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Yo, Steve. 😛

I know from a raw cpm perspective that any hard/softstepping I have done changes the cpm by about 4....or 1/3 a flex

Softer tip (longer tip) is also used in clubmaking to compensate for lighter heads and lower lofts as the set progresses from short to long irons. I just put the set on the bench and aligned the steps and it looks like they were all tip trimmed on a half inch slope, so the 4 iron shaft going into the 7 would have 1 1/2" longer parallel section to the first step. If this would make the 7 play like an R or Sr. flex with the same trajectory that is what I am looking for. If it is still going to play like an S flex but higher trajectory that is not what I am looking for.

as long as you aren't launching them too high should be kinda like a full flex softer. Let us know how it turns out . Will you just try one first ?

No, will do the whole set. If they don't work I can pull them back out. I have several other options in steel and graphite in flexes I know will work. I just started this thread wondering if the OEM shafts might be worth the effort to soft step before I ream the hosels. I have always bought Ping irons cheap mainly for the heads and have never bought a set that had the right flex for me. A lot of people like the OEM Ping steel shafts.

Reshafting PING heads is sooooo much easier once you get the factory-installed shafts out. I have had to heat Eye 2 heads with a torch for well over a full minute to get that stinky shit to pop. Once reshafted with epoxy from this planet, they break loose with 15 or 20 seconds of heat.

I think that they also add something to the glue to make it smell like burned camel ass hair to punish us who dare remove their shafts.
