We are thinking of moving to Denton to be near family. I pretty much know the weather situation, but not too much about the area as far as places to live and golf. Anyone here who lives or has lived around there?

Denton is really growing as I've been visiting clients just south of there (Justin) several times a year. But the whole Metroplex is booming with more major corps fleeing Cali and other high tax states announced just before Christmas. There are several good golf courses along the I-35W corridor I've played and could recommend that are all reasonably priced. You have several discount tee-time reservation services that compete for players and it has kept prices in check all over North TX.

@MidwayJ

He hasn't been active much, but I thought I remember a post from him not too long ago.

I am in Richardson - moved to TX in 2019, haven't spent much time in Denton. Personally, TX is my least favorite of the four regions of the country where I've lived, thanks mostly to its always-awful weather. But, I understand moving somewhere to be close to loved ones :-)

Denton seems to have the college town vibe compared to the rest of DFW. Tons of good public places to golf. Green fees are very reasonable and courses in solid shape. Check out idealgolfer.com as they run some great special throughout the year. Good luck with your decision!

I didn't know you were now in Tx! Mostly awful weather? Is it different from DFW or Austin area?

I know they get humidity and they get storms rolling through with some big hail in DFW.

Yep, I followed the work with my company - Richardson is about 15 miles north of Dallas. There are many nice towns within DFW, but the insane TX property taxes and weather (think extremes of every type of weather imaginable) have me excited to leave.

Apparently there is "hail season" out here, who knew lol. Almost all of the people I sit around at work (say 10ish in that pre-covid section of the building) had to replace the roof on their house since 2016 from one storm or another. Some had hail punching holes in their roof while others had hail breaking many windows.

Yeah, we have friends in Flower Mound and Addison and they talked about being able to get their car fixed once a year because of the hailor getting roofs or skylights replaced because of it.

livegolf - I sent him a private message a couple of weeks ago wishing him a Merry Christmas and hoping some of the issues his family was facing have been resolved. In the past, I had also reached out to him when I was going to be in his area inviting him to join us in a golf game at a nearby course he had mentioned playing and maybe joining. He shared a lot of his personal trials with his family with us on this board but he shunned any person's attempts to communicate with him directly (as far as I know). I think having a beverage while relaxing after a round of golf would be intriguing.

Thanks for the info. Not the most glowing summary, LOL! But I'm glad to get honest info.
I'm from IL, we pay $6K+ on a $240K home. I doubt TX will shock me on that front? The home prices will be higher from what I see. We will save money on income tax, though.

My biggest concern is traffic. My wife and I are mid 60s retired, and we both are small town people who hate putting up with traffic. Being retired we obviously have a lot of flexibility about when to run an errand. But still.

Not a fan of tornadoes. Especially since there aren't basements there. We had a house destroyed, and out next home was also damaged, several years after we had sold it. So I guess I should be used to living in a tornado zone. :/

We would get the hell out in the summers. Reverse snowbirding.

It looks like there is less golf over near Denton. That's according to Google maps anyway. Well, all I need is one good local course, and then if I have to drive a half hour with buddies once in a while for a different one, that's fine.

We are going to look at Robson Ranch. They have what looks like a very good course.

There are 2 really good courses at Flower Mound I've played; Bridlewood GC and Tour 18. Then a little further south on I-35W across from the Tx International Speedway is Champions Circle. I've played all 3 and are fun designs. In Denton, the women's college has a course that receives good reviews but I haven't played it yet. Another course on my radar I want to play someday, and north of Denton, is The Bridges in Gunter (a Boom Boom Couples design). All of the courses mentioned wouldn't involve fighting traffic because I'm sensitive to that too.

Robson Ranch shows up on the discount booking sites once in a while but I haven't been out there yet. I've perused their real estate listings when looking around too. There are a lot of new developments popping up all around Denton. If I was seriously looking, I'd probably be focusing further north of Denton or south of Burleson/Ft. Worth. It appears housing is currently more affordable but still choices on good golf courses and you still have easy access to toll roads and I-35/1-35W to get in/out of the Metroplex fairly easy. But, I like a slower pace of life I enjoy living here 50 miles from the western burbs of KC.

I’m interested in figuring out how far west of Denton we’d have to go to live a small town life. Problem is, there don’t seem to be golf courses. In our travels across rural Texas, I’ve noticed a distinct lack of golf.

                  mikeintopeka
BTW our family lives basically in Justin, where you go for work. It’s a Northlake address. We are trying to be close to there.

DonM - you are very observant about the lack of golf west of Denton, grasshopper. That is why I said I would personally look north of Denton or south of Burleson/Ft. Worth.🤠

DonM - Northlake is where my customers are located too! They are about 1/2 way between the city of Justin and Corral City (convenience and liquor store entrance to I-35W). When they built out there, their development was brand new homesites and now there is a lot of new building areas between Justin and Corral City.

Mom's Cafe in Justin is one of my all-time favorite breakfast or dinner spots. Surely you've been there too? Mom is the bomb. Justin and its small-town feel is about to be swallowed up by new housing construction all around it too.

Scratch south of the Metroplex. You'd fight traffic every time you went to visit your family and I HATE their traffic problems that start now before 6 am and can last past 7 pm during their drives to/from work.

If I was getting serious, I'd look around Sanger and over to Gunter or up to Whitesboro and back over to Gainesville. I know there's 2 good courses along the Red River and the aforementioned The Bridges. There is a toll road that has been approved so it's going to tie that region into the Metroplex over the next 10 years - beat the rush north and reap the appreciation.

If you are at all interested, there is a private gated resort on the TX side of Lake Texoma with a Nicklaus design golf course (see link). It is awesome. Another client owns a building lot in there he would really like to sell below his cost if you have any interest. He can also arrange a one or two night stay in their condos next to the clubhouse so you can explore the area and the rates are low. You'd be about an hour from Justin and it is beautiful up there with another nice course on the other side of the lake or go over to the Oklahoma side to the world's largest casino with their two championship courses.

It's the area I've looked at for a possible move someday.
