A Spiritless Whiskey Review

Back in April I heard or a low/no alcohol whiskey replacement.
There are several on the market, but this one is from Kentucky. It's actually called Kentucky 74.

Well, I finally received my order today. So being a bourbon enthusiast, here are my thoughts....

Appearance looks like weak tea. The aroma on the nose reminds me of apple cider and burnt licorice.

The taste is nothing like I've tried. Not a whiskey flavor you'd be familiar with (me anyway). Kinda flat but with a slight twinge at the end. Definitely something I wouldn't drink neat. Almost tastes like an ashtray smells. Not peat like scotch.

I haven't tried it in cocktails, but I might give it a go in an Old Fashion or Manhattan.

If anyone else has tried it, let me know you thoughts.

Non alcoholic drinks are gaining in popularity so I expect we see more and more of this thing.....and why not, the vast majority of people have a drink for the taste/flavour but might have to drive or just don't want to have any alcohol sometimes.

non alcoholic beer has been around forever and is a multi-billion $ industry.

i am far from a bourbon aficionado ( the DS gang got me onto it ) but Blantons and Four Roses are the best to my taste buds. My brother likes Woodford and I usually give him a bottle for Xmas. One of the members gave me a bottle of Elijah Craig small batch and i am very much enjoying it neat. He also gave me a bottle of Crown Royal Royal Harvest or something or other and I gave it to a buddy ( apparently not the best rye so maybe that was an insult) i dont do rye

I am a beer drinker and they have never been able to make a no or low alky beer that had any kind of decent taste to it. Perhaps the bourbon dudes will figure it out and pass it along. I think Heineken and Bud have a new product out but I haven't seen them marketed around here.

Weirfan My brother likes Woodford and I usually give him a bottle for Xmas.

A boating bud who was a Early Times drinker had a Woodford rep buy him some shots at a casino bar. He liked it. We gave him a bottle for retirement and he sipped on it neat all summer and bragged with every shot how good it was. His wife was retiring soon and we asked him what to get her. She is a rum drinker but he jokingly said "Get her some Woodford." A plan was hatched. A bartender friend was putting up a new bottle of Woodford on the bar and I got her to carefully peel off the seal and tassel and gave them to me with the box and empty bottle. I went to the drug store and got a bottle of Woodford and compared it in color to the others. A cheap botttle of Yellowstone matched. I filled the Woodford bottle with it and carefully resealed it and put in in the box and it looked like it came right off of the shelf. The next spring at the marina we gave her the "new" bottle of Woodford. He sipped on the bottle all summer and bragged on it until one day he found the old bottle of Woodfort with a few shots left that had gotten pushed backed on the shelf. Comparing the two he finally noticed a difference.

I am a Scotch drinker and Bourbon is my least favorite spirit but if that is all there is, then yes, please pour me a Bourbon.

I rarely drink liquor but if I do scotch or tequila. Bourbon is relatively new to my repertoire and it started with the old fashioned , damn peer pressure at Desert Storm 😉 ....they are tasty.

Reading this thread makes me want to pour a drink but reserve that to dinner time or later.
probably have a glass of Cab with the surf and turf pasta dish I am making and might get real crazy and sip on an Aberlour on the rocks before bed

I got contacted by the CEO in a response to my review.

She had some questions and we talked about a few different things. She asked that I try it in a 50/50 cocktail. I agreed.. When I went to pour the drink,, i found this sediment in the bottom of the bottle.

When I asked her about it, she said it was normal and to "Shake it up and enjoy"

I totally disagree. There are times when people want to enjoy their usual beverages but don't want the alcohol content for numerous reasons. If anyone needs to get buzzed or shit faced every time they drink a beverage, fine, that is their choice. The low or no alky drinks are an option for those who desire them.

I haven't been buzzed since 2004. Did not mean to upset you.
