My 11-yr-old Yorkie had a severe bout of pancreatitis back in Feb of 2019. Same situation... lethargic, wouldn't eat, wouldn't drink water, vomiting, shaking uncontrollably... it was a scary couple of days. $1900 later we (thankfully) learned that it wasn't a tumor, but inflammation in his pancreas. So since then we've changed his diet to low-fat, and the food is prescription-based, and $45/week basically... we also spend $125/mo on maintenance medication designed to improve digestion and ward off those chronic attacks.
Now he needs to have some teeth extracted. So he's on all these medications, and he has another appointment next week because they found some elevated levels in his liver enzymes that they need to get to the bottom of before they feel comfortable enough to put him under anesthesia. So another $400 ultrasound upcoming, followed by another $1200+ to have the bad teeth removed.
Our furry friends can't tell us what is hurting them when they feel bad, and sometimes it creates some definite stress, because as has been mentioned - they're indeed become part of our family.
