I think before I do any purchasing, I'm going to look through my shaft bin for some 7/8 irons shafts and shaft a few of them and take them to the range. I think I have a pretty good selection of different shafts.

The Sterlings I used to have had Wishon S2S White graphite shafts in them, and total length to the end of the grip was 36.75”.

My suggestion is to pick a proven shaft you've liked in the past and build a test club, and I'd pick the one that you are gonna go weight/lengthwise in the sterling set. If you are thinking 7i weight/length, then build the 7i. Tweak from there.

Pulled and weighed the heads today. Most were right around 274g give or take a few tenths. One was a little lighter at 272. I found 6 different shafts and shafted all but the GW. Hope to take them to the range on Monday or Tuesday.

One thing I did notice, when I pulled the grips off each shaft was numbered. I would have assumed all the shafts would be the same, so don't know why they were labeled.....?

Lightest to heaviest or if a good club maker built them weakest to stiffest measured via frequency or deflection along with weight.

That’s a pretty nice yard sale find! Good luck on the build.

Took the clubs out to the range. Hitting off mats, so that always can skew things, but I liked them. Short irons were high, and I think I actually gained almost a club length on them. Was hard to tell with the way the sun was that day just where the ball was landing. The longer irons 5-6 also went plenty high. Right now they are all shafted with a different brand/weight of shaft. I will need to order some shafts and rebuild them properly. I am planning on actually putting them in the bag this weekend with the franken shafts for a round.

I did notice that the 5,6,7 irons have a different sound then the 8-pw. They make a metallic "tink" when you hit them. Different, but not too bad. Reminds me of some old hollow core irons I use to have.

Don't see many WISHON clubs out there. My PIAS store has a set of 550MB on the rack in nice shape. 1st set I've seen that wasn't in my bag.

I play the Cobra F7 SL irons. How much better are the Sterlings? I can't really find any for sale and have no idea how I could find a set to buy if I wanted to.

I’ve owned and played both the Sterlings and DTG In1zone SL irons, and demoed both the Cobra F7 and F8 One Lengths. The DTG irons were my first set and were ok in both distance and feel. Both the Cobras felt kinda harsh, both excellent in distance. The Sterlings were OUTSTANDING in both departments. You can find them on eBay, and there are still a few U.S. club builders that carry the Wishon brand.

You may be hard pressed to find the Sterlings now that Wishon’s new equal length irons are out, but give these guys a shout out, they may still have some.....

I tried a few of these clubs on loan for a while. That 'tink' sound on the six iron really let you know the iron truly had the hot face.

I don't think I kept them long enough to really decide. For me it was harder to hit the relatively long wedge than it was to hit the relatively short six iron.

Overall, a really beautiful and well designed set of irons.

Same here, 4 & 5 irons flew low and short, everything lofted higher than gap wedge flew too high and long, plus I couldn’t get used to using such long shafted wedges around the greens. The 6 thru gap were money tho.

Played yesterday and threw the franken shafted Sterlings in the bag. Still had my traditional 3 and 4 irons. 5-PW Sterlings with a different shaft in each one.

One word, WOW! I did not miss hit an iron all day and I think I used just about every club. I had one iron shot that wasn't at least somewhat on line, but I normally have a few iron shots per round that I hit high fade/slices. Didn't have that with these yesterday at least. 5 and 6 iron shots went plenty high on the course and using a better then driving range ball I didn't really notice the "tink" sound.

I didn't see that much yardage difference on the course. Maybe 5 yards, but will need to play on a more familiar course to really gauge that. I did have probably my best round ever shooting a 69 on a par 36 nine-hole course. Played different tees the "back" 9. It was an easy course, was really wide open on almost every hole and if I had putted a little better it could have been even lower. Three putted the 18th for bogey.......

Looking to get out to my normal course tomorrow for a round with the new clubs. But most likely will be ordering some shafts and putting these bad boys in the bag for now anyway.

DonM Well, if round 2 goes like round 1........I'll probably just stick with the franken shafts! My home course has MUCH MUCH smaller greens, so I expect a lot more missed greens like normal. IF I hit most greens the hodgepodge shafts are staying, lol.

I think right now I have a Royal Precision stepless shaft from who knows when, probably 20 years old. A Dynalite Gold True Temper shaft, an FST 115 shaft, a DTG Vivid white shaft, and an Apollo stepped shaft. Oh, and they have like 4 different grips as well!

1 length, many different parts 😎

Well, round 2 didn't go as well. Still hit some nice solid shots, but my swing was just a little off today. I do think I need to put the same shaft in all the heads. Some clubs don't have much of a gap right now. My 9 and PW go about the same distance. Probably due to a difference in the shafts being used. Still have to figure out my distances. My Wishon 979ss clubs my 150-155 club was the 8 iron.

Today I had several 150 shots and I came up short with a 9, and went long on one hole with an 8. So, before I play much more with them I need to get the same shaft in each club! Looking forward to a little tinkering. Haven't built many clubs in a while!

I tried several sets of SL clubs. My experience was, overall I did not like them. That said, I did like the "longer" shorter irons (8 to W's) so I built a set as such and I like them. 6 and 7 are the length that best fits me. Then a "sliding" length to where the W's are one inch longer.
