Some time ago, I told Aaron at ValueGolf that I thought they were making a mistake moving the weight of their Pinhawks from a 6-iron weight to an 8-iron weight. I told them that at a 6-iron weight, the player/builder had the option to add weight, whereas it's difficult to take weight off. Aaron said that he had more feedback from players saying that they actually wanted more weight in the head so they could play them even shorter than an 8-iron. I found that hard to believe, particularly in the long irons.
A couple of weeks ago, I went to hit balls into my net, but realized that clubs were still in my trunk. But my wife's single length iron was sitting by the back door so I grabbed it to just have a few swings. My wife is only 5' 3" and I'm 5' 11", so the club was way too short. I had to grip the club so that my hand was partially off the grip. But, wow, I couldn't believe how easy it was to control the shorter, lighter club. I pured ball after ball, and I had the feeling that my swing speed was at least equal to my regular 5-iron.
So, I went down my basement and built a couple of single length clubs about 3/4" longer than my wife's. The length? 35.25 inches! About the length of my SW. I haven't hit them on the course yet, but they're fun to hit into my net and I'm really hitting the ball cleanly. We'll see how my distances are, though. I may have to go to a flex face for the lower irons. We'll see.
If they work, I'll make the apology official. 🙂
