My friend's fitting

A good friend of mine got fit at Golftec by his instructor. They are showing substantial gains. I sure hope it works out for him. If it does, that would be great.

Existing driver: G30 10.5, full length, S flex 128 Ball speed, 3322 spin, 12.50 LA, 216 yds total
New: G410 LST 9.0, 44 inches, X flex 136 BS, 2584 spin, 10.5 LA, 246 yds.
I'm not sure why the S and X flexes. He does have a short quick swing.

So if he gets the 30 yards without sacrificing accuracy, then cool. He wasn't hitting the G30 worth crap anyway.

Irons:
Old: X2 Hot Pro, R flex graphite. 31d 7 iron: 100 BS, 5240 spin, 16.25 LA, 38d Descent, 135 yds
New: Mavrik, R flex graphite, 27d 7 iron: 109 BS, 5327 spin, 18 LA, 43.5 descent, 155 yds.

One club's worth lower loft, but more speed, spin, height and stopping power, and 20 more yards.

I'm going to be extremely interested to see how this all works out. For his sake I hope it does.

I didn't get fitted but moved to a similar style set last year at this time. Lower lofted irons that produce higher trajectory shots, greater descent angle for better stopping and easily a full club longer. It took some time to get it all dialled in but my index has dropped 6 strokes since then. ( yes new rules of lowest 8/20 scores count has been a minor factor)

I too have had to add 4 wedges after the pw....a 47, 52, 56 and either a 60 or 62.
I use 5-pw and carry a driver and 3 wood and switch between a 4i and 3y depending on the course to make the 13 clubs plus putter.

my advice tell him to give it some time, the hardest part was believing I needed a pw from 130-140/5 where that was always a 9i with my Pings

I just went to the Flightscope Optimizer thingy and plugged in the data. Here are the projected results according to Flightscope:

Old driver 193 carry, 216 total (hard surface)
New driver 205 carry, 250 total

Old 7 iron 135 carry
New 7 iron 155 carry

So those all match up with the data given.

That's good to hear. His swing speeds are virtually the same as me so I'm going to be paying close attention to the real world results.

I'm going to try out the Maltby TS2 6 iron. If it doesn't hold its own against his new 7, I'm going to look into OEM myself.

it’ll hang in there just fine. Just make sure you’re comparing apples to apples. You can’t stick a 110 gram steel shaft in the maltby and use a 65 gram graphite in the mavrik, then expect the ball speeds and distances to be similar.

I've eyed the TS2's and would go that route if , or should I say when the mojo in these leaves.
the component world is very lacklustre these days but I do like the Maltby iron and wedge offerings. Only component I play is a Maltby 62 degree wide sole wedge but i like everything about the TS2
( except potential resale value) with the golf craze here and demand for clubs I can sell my current irons for as much , likely more than I paid for them new.

Understood. No I will be using my favorite shaft, which is a 64 gram Aldila NV. Formerly the Aldalite. I profiled and torqued the NV and it's the same shaft, which I suspected. They jacked up the price but at least I can still buy it.

Interesting driver fitting considering it seems like his swing speed is in 90's so x- flex wouldn't be my guess at what would work. As well, I'm surprised that 2500rpm of spin is enough for his swing speed. He must have a compact short and fast swing

Yes he is short and quick. I think the spin is fine but the launch seems low. Everything I read suggests spin in the mid twos and launch in the low teens for my swing speed.

as you know the numbers are highly correlated to the measuring device used. Trackman , Gc2 , Flightscope will all give different numbers.

also A of A comes into play. The spin generated and optimal spin will vary with a 0 AofA versus say a 4-5* upward AofA. Some guys have a -ve AofA.

nothing wrong with <2500 rpm it really depends.

I'm 105 ish mph and try to keep spin down .....

Here is a cool article by Ping on driver optimization. I don't know his angle of attack but I'd say it's a flippy positive angle.
So at the ball speeds he had, and say 2d up, the optimum is mid 2000s and 15-ish launch.

At 136 mph ball speed he's not over 100 mph club head speed. More low-mid 90's. 10.5 deg. launch angle not optimized at all IMO. Should be closer to 14 deg. I'd like to know the shaft profile/EI profile of these S/X shafts he's being fitted for. I want to see the real world results. 😀 Color me skeptical. Golftec is only as good as the fitter and most of these guys from Golftec I have run in to know very little about fitting more about the swing kinda like most PGA guys.

Irons might be true, the Mavrik’s are incredible and the shaft flex at least makes sense for his speed.
Driver: A quicker transition can support an x flex. I’m not aggressive and even with my speed I was fitted for stiff flex. Your friend though.... like Scott said, the speed is just not there regardless of the transition and he’s NOT going to get 40 yards of roll like the flightscope thing said.

You guys are raising good points.

Flex, who knows. The pdf he sent me says Ping Stock shaft. I play a TM stock Atmos R flex that tests as an X flex, lol. And it's the best driver shaft I've hit in a long time. (The lower half is soft.)

Roll-out. Yeah they are obviously using the hard ground setting. In any event, if he really does pick up 12 yards of carry at a lower launch, he's going to get more roll-out than he used to. Heck I would pay $500 easy for 12 yards of carry.

Launch angle. It looks like with his mechanics, to get 3-4 more degrees of launch would probably take the spin into the mid 3000s. From what I'm seeing on Youtube and reading in the last year or two, it seems like the trend is to accept lower launch in order to get the spin down. I recall Wishon advised to do the opposite, to ignore the spin within reason, in favor of the LA. I bet the OEMs have a better handle on this. What are you guys seeing?

It makes me want to try some flavor of low spin driver. My hits cluster around the middle of the face so I ought to be able to get away with some less forgiveness. But I don't want to! lol I still have that one out on the toe once or twice per round.

DonM Don--I am 90 mph with higher spin 10.5 deg square face angle +AofA 14 deg, launch angle and tried various lower torque shafts to lower my spin. Complete failure for me as I am the opposite from your friend. Best shaft for me is the Fujikura Vista Pro 60 R2. The Vista Pro is a flighted line and found the 45g and 55g too high a flight for me. 60g mid flight a bit more roll out and enough spin to get the best carry. Decent spin at lower than 100 mph depending on transition time and release can be your friend. We are not ALL 115 mph driver club head speed looking for lower spin numbers. I've seen to many try and lower spin to the detriment of their driver performance. Try a Ventus aftermarket if you have the stats. to support it.

By the by, the ball using a Snell MTB-X made more difference in better driver distance than any factor for me. Assuming you are "fit" correctly.

All this makes my head hurt. I just keep trying drivers until I find one that finds fairways and goes as far or farther than the last one I got bored with. I put it in the bag as my next ex-driver. Saves a lot of ciphering.

That's what Rory did on Monday this week. Took his Trackman outdoors a bunch of heads and shafts out and tried different combo's until he found a combo that gave him slightly more spin and kept the ball on line better than what he had been using. Look where he is now at Olympia Fields. 😀
