Being a lover of big ole thick top line shovel irons I snagged a set of Eye 2's off of ebay 3 - W with stock steel shafts. 2 shafts had been replaced with something I couldn't ID. The shafts didn't interest me anyway as my plan was to ream them out and reshaft. I also picked up a SW and LW to got with them. After sitting in the closet for two years I finally got them out last week, reamed and reshafted the 6 - LW with FST 115 shafts which I use in most of my other sets. Th e 3- W heads had matching serial numbers. When I weighed all of the heads I noticed the 6 - W were all about one club lighter than I would expect in "normal" sets. The SW was normal at 296g but the LW was a whopping 309g. So I decided to do a one club soft step tip trim for the 6 - W and a normal tipping for the SW and LW. I added Winn Excell jumbo grips to them all.
I put these in the bag yesterday for a round. I anticipated some issues dialing in the distances with these since they are very high lofted irons with the W, SW and LW at 50.5°, 57.5° & 61°. Next was the shaft flex guess. Good news, I nailed the flex and it was right on about feel. Bad news is I absolutely hit moon balls with these. The clubs looked nice at address, felt solid on impact, went very high which is ok but it really short distance wise. At age 70 I have been losing iron distance the last couple of years. My 50° A wedge I usually hit about 100 yards. I only got about 80 from the Eye 2 W. My normal 7 is now about 140 but only 120 with the Eye 2. What this does is it leaves a huge gap between the 7 iron and a Titlelist 816h1 hybrid I have dialed up to 29° and can smooth it to 150. I actually hit these well yesterday but very short. I have given up on the 6 iron this year and can't hit the Eye 2 6 either. Too bad their is such a gap diff with these and my hybrids since I hit these better than any other set this season. And after 9 shank shots last time out I did not have a single one yesterday. Oh, the SW and LW didn't work for me at all. I think with the lofts I was afraid I was going to hit myself in the nuts and the LW felt like swing a brick. So, that is my review of the Eye 2's. Nice heads but maybe not the best for me distance wise. I might try a steel shaft with a more of a boring trajectory but don't know if that is available in a senior flex.
