I mean does it REALLY need to be stated for clarity here that (for the vast majority of his work, though certainly not all) that Mel Brooks was making fun of those who use those offensive ideas/words/etc ? He was punching up directly at those who punch down. Making the unacceptable viewpoint the butt of the joke, not the joke itself.
That's what provocative , subversive satire/comedy SHOULD be.
