Green Speed-Head Weight of Putter

What's your preference of head weight on your putter for slow or fast greens? Mine is lighter (around 335g) for fast greens and (around 360g to 375g) for slow greens. I tend to get better performance in that weight configuration.

I believe that's why PGA/LPGA pro's have never aligned with heavier putter heads in general and use 335g putters as they putt majority of the time on fast greens. Where the majority of recreational golfers play on slow greens.

I play a heavy putter all year round (386g head) plus a 50g counter core grip. To your question, heavier head makes sense for slower greens- i know when i have a really long putt, its much easier to get to the hole with a heavy vs a lighter putter. As well, on really fast greens, i have to be careful because sometimes the heavy head just hits the ball too hard- it's easy to blow the ball by the hole

I would think it would be just the opposite for me. I had one of those L2 Lateral Line putters that was just a sledge hammer. Unbelievably good on short putts. You had to put so much effort in the putter to get the ball to the hole .On slow greens it would be next to impossible. But it was good on fast greens, because you wouldn't blow the ball past the hole. Everybody I know who had one got rid of it because it was hard to get the ball to the hole on long putts on the slower greens around here.

garyt1957 On the L2 putter I used to be a dealer. What it is with face-on/side saddle putters is they are harder to use for lag putting. To me that's the real issue with face-on putters. I have used SmartPutter (medium weight), Wonder Putter (lighter), Juan Putt (heavier) and L2 (heavier) for me they all have their lag putting issues on any speed green. YMMV.

I stick to ~ 400g , much lighter feels like a wafer to me. Have been experimenting this year, between mallet- Yes sandy 12, Nickent Omen Prophecy #4 (backweighted and longer length), and blade Maltby Pure Track PTM (~ 386g). Feels light to me but it's the flavor of this week. Also messung with grip. Can't quite get comfortable with that traditional overlap of two fingers. 10 fingers with thumbs down the handle feels the best to me....speed control and long putting is much more consistent, but I'm working on directional control.

I dont switch putters doe conditions , like i do wedges but prefer Heavy putter on fast greens and light on slow. Around here green speeds are pretty quick...the two courses i play most keep them 10-11 . I actually spoke to our pin placement guy yesterday to make the pins easy placement to help with pace

I forget what my basic Mentor Sports Triad II weighs but it has three 1/2" x 2" cylinderical weights I can change out for other weights. I keep two 50g weights in the front and back ports and change the middle one to how the green speeds are. I usually have a 50g or 100g weight in the middle in the spring or when I think the greens are slow and put a 14g weight in the middle most of a "normal" summer. FWIW I still play a 41" belly putter, and like Bernhard I don't ground it. 😜

Langer uses a broom stick length way more than 41"s and he is playing USGA/R&A for money tourneys. I say he has the butt of the putter in his left hand. His left hand is against his chest....locked to his chest using it as a fulcrum point.

For those that started with a light putter like the original PiNG Anser, the lighter weight feels 'right'
I did and now prefer 340g, flo neck, slight offset - I'm left eye dominant, right handed (like Nicklaus).
Tried heavy just to experiment - no go. Years ago, a fitting showed what works for me. Highly recommended.

I've used the same Odyssey Rossie II putter for the last 3-4 years. It's a standard weight, but I don't know
the specs....I'm guessing 350 grams head weight. I've added 2 inches in length due to my height, so that
makes it feel a bit heavier, but I use it no matter the anticipated green speed.

Tried one. Same expedience great on short putts sucked otherwise.

Not changed for years after being fitted. I used the specs to find a putter that 'felt' right as to weight, etc.
My feeble brain has been imprinted with that putter which helps greatly with distance control.

I don't switch putters any more.....well maybe the gamer gets stuck in the basement for a round or 2. I think my current putter is 350-360g. I wouldn't mind if it was maybe 340. I like to give the ball a hit, but you have to be careful if the head is 370-380g. I do like the heavier heads on short putts, but overall I like the head lighter and then a decent backweight. Lately I am just getting sick of the insert in mine. Really want the same putter shape, but no insert.

Same here, mostly.
The only time I will switch for sure is if there is near 100% percent rain in the forecast and I have to play no matter what (usually a scramble or something pre-paid) and then putter for sure, but most likely the whole bag gets a rest.
