It’s not the equipment.
It’s not the y!ps.
I putt good on practice greens, even on the first read. My technique is pretty sound.
On course I can’t make squat. Can’t get out of my own way. I think I am over analyzing putts; thinking too much about speed and then trying to calibrate it. Trying too hard.
I’m not thinking about much on the practice green. Maybe there is a lesson there, if only I wasn’t so thick.

I have had a Mentor Sports Triad II in the bag for at least 10 years and have putted well with it. The rest of my game is currently in the toilet and for some reason the Triad decided to join it. I have been tinkering with the weights but no change. I guess I will have to put it in time out and get out the backup which is an old Integra Anser type with lead poured into the back cavity and appropriately named "Mr. Fugly."

I also have a Smart Putter and have finally committed to seriously practicing with it and hopefully keep it in the bag. It's a unique way to putt and makes a lot of sense to me. Face the hole and stroke the ball. Similar to shooting baskets or bowling. I can see the line much better and putts inside 6 feet are almost automatic. Where I struggle is with long lag putts getting the speed correct.

I remember when Sam Snead was cleaning everyone's clock using the croquet style. Then he had to go side saddle after a rules change was made. I also remember him later putting his right hand almost down to the head.

I'm with ya! Been a face-on/side saddle guy for years started with an old Positive Putter TLB side saddle. Randy Haag's method is also good. I am bowler so it makes sense to me and right eye dominant.

I haven't gone to their website yet, but do you know....is the Smart Putter heavier than a standard putter? Is the lie
angle more upright? Does the putter have any other modifications that make it different from a regular putter?

I started out with a Hammy putter years ago and shot some of my best rounds using that technique. I then ran into a rough patch with putts going left on me so went back to traditional. After being fed up being a mediocre to poor putter, I went back to face-on, buying a Juan putter and a few others with so-so results. I liked the concept but could never commit myself to it. After a round with five three-putts and a four-putt, I said screw it and bought the Smart Putter off the Golf Etail site for about $25 (they might still have some). I'm becoming more comfortable with it.
Do you use a particular grip with your Smart Putter?

Bobby Jones lobbied the USGA after Snead went croquet. If you use a SmartPutter it's about as close as you can get but legal and not across the line. See video. It's a true stroke with two hands on the grip unlike the Champions Tour Langer, Mccarron etal broomstick locked to their chest. 😀

USGA stopped that side saddle technique locked arm to shaft. I don't see much difference to arm lock putting what he is using now.

Same grip as shown by Paul Cleeve. I ordered a 36" from Golf eTail. Mine is 32" per Paul's recommendation but I want to see what a longer one will do and the price is right. Thanks for the link!

Today I shot 39-51. 18 putts on the front nine, and 24 on the back!!!! Nine 3-putts. 🙁
Or flipping it around, front nine 21 shots tee to green. That's fantastic.
Back nine 27, not good. You'd think with all those chip shots I could stay below the holes, maybe??
I hit a ton of fairways.
I had 8 GIR. The standard formula says that should get you a score of 79.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

I think the issue is simply, the greens are too damn fast for their slopes. Heaven forbid you hit 15 feet left or right, pin high. Lag putting is nerve wracking. Short side or downhillers are probably more so. Some greens need fookin' windmills. I'm not the only member who thinks the same. But it's what we have here. It goes with the dour masochist Scandinavian personality of this town. 🙂

In Arizona I averaged 30 putts.

I'm going to take a couple of hours of quiet reflection. I need to figure out how to make peace with the game at this course. Probably I need to figure out how to stay below every_fricking_hole. Especially on chips.

What's been the avg. length of your putts, esp. when 3 putting? Coming up short, or 'sliding' by....or running by?

I'll put this out there, but you should already know it.....when putting on slick/fast greens, with a lot of slope, use the toe, not the center, of the putter.

DonM I once hit every Fw and every green in reg for a 9 hole round. Had 24 putts for a 42!
Also once took 40 shots tee to green with 45 putts for an 85! Should have been my lowest round ever.

Once you get over the weird look and figure out how it works, it is a very efficient and logical way to putt.

Face-on putting has always made sense to me, if only for the reason that you are looking RIGHT DOWN THE LINE!!
Unfortunately, Sam Snead was the guy who started using croquet style putting, and Jones and Cliff Roberts didn't care for Sam and some of his philandering ways when he was younger. So naturally, Jones used his influence with
the USGA types to get them to rule against a "non-traditional" type of putting.

The more I golf there, I've lost my ability to be sure to get it past the hole. So I'm either short or sliding by. I use a high MOI mallet, you might as well say there is no toe. 🙂

These are the kind of greens that you have a lot of first putts where your miss is basically guaranteed to run down 20 feet below the hole. I need to learn to shrug it off. And I need to learn to stay below the holes.

I think they are slicking things up for the club championship in 11 days. I hope that's it.
