This is my review of the Robin fairway wood (3 wood). After the offer made by Peter to test their clubs, I contacted him. Yesterday the 3 wood arrived.
Before I get into the club, a little about me. I am a 62 y/o who plays to an 11 handicap. Driver swing speed is in the 90s. Swing is smooth with an Arnold Palmerish type finish - which comes naturally since I grew up in Latrobe, PA. Seems like all of us from there got the finish through osmosis.
The club, ad you can see from the pictures is all black without much adornment. The only thing on the shaft is a label saying "Made in China".
Measurements were done by my Golftec coach. Length is 43 inches, with a D-1 (1.5 actually) swingweight. Shaft stiffness was measured at 4.1. Grip is standard sized, and comfortable. No offset noted, and club is very easy to set up square.
Although not my best swing day, carry distance averaged 195 yards with rollout to 215 yards. Ball flight was the a boring, line drive type. Good for cutting through the wind and getting rollout. Not quite what I am used to with my Cleveland 588 3 wood with Miyazaki shaft. The Robin shaft seems to be butt stiff, making it hard for me to feel where the club was during my swing.
Yesterday went to the range with my nephew, who plays golf a couple times a year. He thoroughly enjoyed the club and begged me to give it to him. Maybe it tends to feel better to someone not accustomed to something else.
Its not a club I would be interested in, but, if my nephew is any indication, should work for someone new to the game.
