Arthritic thumb

In the past six months, I've developed a really sore left thumb. The pain goes down my thumb and into my wrist. I'm pretty sure it's arthritis as I have it...

If you are not sure it is Arthritis, I 've had a condition called Trigger Thumb in both hands over the years , usually happens around this time of the year when there is a ton of yard work, wheelbarrows of garden soil, mulch, raking etc. I've had 2 cortisone shots in one and one in the other which alleviated the issue each time. Due to the catabolic effects of cortisone shots , 2 is all my specialist will do then surgery....

Arthritis in the hands is a challenge and can be debilitating, hoping for the best for you

Not 100% sure it's arthritis, just taking a guess. I've never heard of "Trigger Thumb" but will research it. When all this virus stuff is over, I'll go in an get an x-ray to determine if it is arthritis. I just know it hurts like hell!

gllama I've used CBD salve and it does help a little. I used to take CBD oil and might go back to it and see if it helps.

One of my buds has huge inflammed knuckles from arthur on one hand and he said the CBD salve does help. I forget why I quit taking CBD, perhaps the cost. I was using a 33mg dose bottle that lasted a month that was $55 from CBDistillery.

I also found the cost to be a bit much for me. I'm considering making my own CBD tincture. I live in Oregon where CBD hemp is legal. From what I've read, it's not hard to make your own tincture. All you need is high CBD hemp flower and Everclear 🙂. I've bought CBD flower from a grower in Oregon (www.tweedlefarms.com) and it does work but can leave me a little sleepy so prefer to take it at night. There's no THC in their flower (or extremely low amounts) so you don't get "high". All kinds of recipes for making your own CBD tincture on the internet.

I've had to struggle with that as well. Switched graphite shafts 4? years ago and use slightly larger GP CP2 Pro grips which helps.

I started taking supplements with Turmeric, Ginger, et al that I swear help with my pain. I had surgery on my right wrist (shattered in car accident before I even took up golf) and also on left hand (fall on the ice) and I don't have 100% mobility in either wrist and I also have Raynaud's which adds to the pain. For years I couldn't do a push with my palms on the floor; I had to do them on my knuckles, but after using anti inflammatory supplements like turmeric, I was finally able to gain back more mobility and reduce the pain enough to put my palms flat (mostly) on the floor. I do try to exercise regularly as well including things specific to my wrist.

I tried taking Tumeric but didn't notice any relief. Wish it worked because I do prefer not taking prescription anti-inflammatory drugs.

I tried Turmeric w/Black Pepper, which is supposed to aid absorption, and found I could not tolerate it when taken in the amounts suggested to be effective. The overall effect was like being on a high fiber on steroids, if you know what I mean.

gllama That's too bad. It doesn't seem to work for my shoulder, but I will probably need surgery there at some point as I don't think supplements can cure everything. I'm not a doc, but if a lot of different anti-inflammatory things are not working for the pain then it may be something that needs to be treated with surgery. The aches and pains I have in my ankles and wrists are from scar tissue and arthritis and Turmeric helps a lot there, but I'm not sure what the shoulder problem is yet and it doesn't seem to help that.

Not to alarm you, but my right shoulder issues started as arthritic pain. When I finally got to the point that I couldn't stand it anymore (couldn't lift stuff, any lateral load caused extreme pain, couldn't sleep), I got an MRI that revealed zero cartridge and an arthritic-ridden joint of inflammation. Total replacement followed. 12 weeks later, I was golfing again and to this day, it feels great.

bogeypro Unfortunately I do know what you mean. I used a certain type of Turmeric powder for a while with that effect. Aches and pains were good, but my stomach couldn't take it.

sdandrea1 Yeah I haven't had an MRI yet. I had a bunch of Xrays which didn't show anything. It was a problem 7-8 years ago when I woke up with frozen shoulder. Had about 2 months of rehab and then 3 months of working out diligently to get it good and it's been pretty good for years now. The last 4 months or so though the pain is really coming back. I've lost some mobility and strength in it too. Not a ton, but enough to notice. When this Covid thing dies down I will probably schedule another checkup.

Yes, avoid 12 years of competitive swimming, 25 years of baseball, softball, and motorcycle racing. I just flat wore that joint out through use, overuse and injury.

have you seen a chiropractor? Having my wrists adjusted does help with my wrist and thumb pain.

I haven't. May visit that route but honestly haven't had much luck with chiropractors in the past. But thanks for the suggestion.

Just like with you, sports have probably taken its toll on on it. Luckily that’s my only issue for the most part. Shoulders are ok, not as good as they used to be, just a little morning stiffness.

I think working in the cold might have been a cause. Since it was 16 I always worked in the frozen food aisle. Most of the time without gloves. Still to this day in the winter my wife is always saying, “ are you going to wear gloves?”

Bravopilot Plus, only old guys type with single fingers, didn't think of that either.

Not all of us. I am 70 and pretty good at touch typing. I was required to take a touch typing class in high school back in the 60's and I thought it was too girlish and a waste of time. How wrong I was.

My Grade 9 timetable had an error and I was "forced" to attend a typing class for a couple of days until the mix up was corrected. It was fun while it lasted.
Of course, I say that because I was the only guy in the class and I could have typed with 3 single digits all day long.

Rickochet I had to take typing classes as well. In one I had this old spinster (she also taught my parents) and she would walk around the room with a yardstick and crack your knuckles if she caught you looking at the keys. I'm not as old as you, but I'm old and grew up in the sticks lol.
