We got home from my grandson's wedding weekend about noon today. I'm playing with my usual travel group Tuesday, and since I have a root canal scheduled for tomorrow, I figured that I wouldn't feel like practicing, so I knew I wanted to hit some balls, but I also needed to walk a couple of miles after a weekend of eating, drinking, and little exercise.
So, on a whim, I decided to go walk nine holes at Collins Park, the 9 hole muni I grew up on and still is only about 5-10 minutes from my house. I've driven past it several times this spring, and (unlike other years) it looks to be in pretty good shape! So, what the hell.....
I waited till about 3 o'clock in case it might be busy earlier in the day. As suspected, it wasn't very busy....two yahoos in front of me in a cart were hacking their way up the first fairway. So I proceeded to follow those two when they were out of range. To let them get well ahead of me, I hit extra shots off the tee and off the fairway. When I got to the green, I spent 5+ minutes chipping and the same amount of time putting. I did this on every green all the way around, hit extra shots, tried out different clubs, etc., etc. The course is only 2700 yards from the white tees, not
a sand trap on the place, but it was perfect for what I wanted to do......just walk around and hit / practice golf shots.
Mission accomplished....The place was in surprisingly good shape, I practiced with every club in the bag, got in some good chipping and putting practice, and walked a couple of miles....all for $10 bucks! I'll be doing this again from time to time, rather than just beat balls off of the mats that my home course has installed....
