Getting started on installing a new range hood. The hood we have is ok but it is a bisque color which we are phasing out our other appliances since replacements in bisque are getting hard to find. The instructions say, "EZ one person installation. We shall see. The biggie is going from a non-vented to a vented. I am having to cut a 4" x 10" area through the back wall which is framed with brick veneer. Ugh. Not looking forward to it. Me and my big ideas. But we have been wanting to do this for years since the unvented hood we have does little to eliminate smoke or smell if you burn something. I have a fresh box of band aids ready.
This reminds me of a funny story about our old range hood. We had a vented hood that vented out a 7" round pipe vertically out the top, through a cabinet and ceiling. I had replaced the hood when we moved in 35 years ago and attached it to the 7" pipe. Ten years ago we had our cabinets refaced and decided to upgrade the hood. As I removed the old hood I noticed that the pipe above the damper was full of blown in insulation. I tugged on the pipe and it dropped down from the ceiling. Apparently the former owner installed this and just stuck the pipe into the attic to vent and not to the outside. We had blown in insulation added to the attic when we moved in and apparently the vent pipe got filled and covered up. So we vented into a clogged pipe going into the attic. Duh.
