Our for profit healthcare system is unsustainable. We pay the most of any first world country, but get far from the best outcomes.
My guess is we’ll eventually catch up to the rest of the wealthy countries. Which is treat healthcare as a right / public service and not as a profit driven privilege for who can afford it.
Most other wealthy nations:
• Have universal coverage
• Use nonprofit or public insurers
• Strictly regulate prices
• Treat healthcare as a public service, even when private providers exist.
Examples:
• Canada: Single-payer, mostly nonprofit delivery
• UK: Publicly funded and largely publicly delivered (NHS)
• Germany / France / Japan: Mixed systems, but tightly regulated and nonprofit-dominant.
The U.S. is not just more private—it is structurally organized around profit incentives to a degree unmatched by other high-income countries.
Again, unsustainable.
