Thinking the irons that I'll put in the bag for the start of the season...
I've been using a set of Ping S56s for quite a while (as in since I bought them new, so something like 10 years - a couple of different sets of shafts, but currently Nippon 950GHs). These are very solid - reliable and accurate when I'm swinging well - but don't offer a lot of forgiveness if things are a little off. I've been looking at alternatives/potential upgrades, and recently picked up a set of Mizuno JPX 919 Forged (5-PW, with Project X LZ graphite shafts) - while I've not had much opportunity to try these, my initial impression is that they are nice clubs but feel is lacking (as in there seems to be very little feedback through the hands - most likely due to the graphite shafts).
As it seems to me that the Mizunos (as currently set up) aren't what I'm looking for, I'm looking at a few options:
- reshaft the JPX 919 Forged irons - have had a look at what's available, and I should be able to get a suitable set of shafts at a decent price (most likely Nippon Modus 105s - a little heavier than I have, but still good quality lightweight steel shafts)
- sell the Mizunos and get a suitable set of second-hand irons in good condition (something giving me the best parts of the S56s and JPX 919s - precision and consistency with a bit of forgiveness) - probably the most cost-effective solution, but it would mean trying to find a set that fits what I need, which isn't necessarily going to be available right now
- sell (or trade in) the Mizunos and get a set of new irons (ideally fitted - most likely through my club's pro shop, as I have a bit of shop credit and want to support the pro and his assistants - which would cut down the brands/models available, but still gives me Titleist/Ping/Callaway/Srixon to choose from) - most expensive, but would make it much more likely that I get something that suits my swing and gives me what I need
Any thoughts/comments/suggestions?
