Yesterday got out and played 36. One of my favorite quirky tracks in the a.m. and the OG Championship Course at Blackwolf Run in the afternoon, which is the back 9 at Meadow Valley and front at The River. Back 9 start which is fine as the MV back is a great 9 holes of golf (#10 is different in it's layout as you tee off down below and hit over the river and up to the green, which is small by Pete Dye standards and there is not much flat area in this green. Even the short putts can double break. A few pics from the approach.
Hilites were birdies on 15 and 16 (6 and 7 on the scorecard) and parring 18. 15 is a par 3 with a multi tier green with a huge swail in the middle. Massive green. Hit over a ravine. I said F it and played from the blues (blacks and blues are a good 15 ft. up on a separate box from the greens/whites) measuring 191 to a back left pin. You can go right at it. Come up short and you are.in the junk/ravine, left in the long grass, or sweep something in right to left and run it down the tier from the right, through the swail and back up and over to the back tier. I hit a nice tight draw with a 5di that landed on the back portion of the front right tier and watched it boomerang around towards the hole. Looked close from where I was but it was a good 20 feet past the pin. Drained the putt.
By this time the wind was howling. Hit a good drive on 18, had 186 to a back pin. Approach is over the river to a slightly raised green. It's a double green shared with the River #18 (same on the scorecard, my 9th). It would be hard to hit the other green as it's so far right and there is a tree grove to carry, you'd have to hit a high right super block. I tried my best as the wind was blowing straight left to right. Come up short you are in the river, pull one and in the river or bank, a little left and in a trap below the surface of the green. I hit what I thought was a perfect shot with my 5di and the wind took it hard right through the green, fringe and just into the rough. No biggie, except there is one tree over the green with three prongs to it. Get to my ball and it appears I'm blocked. Sensible play would be to chip 10 feet left and make a putt. Eyed it up and if I just miss the left prong I can use the slope of the green to bring it back to the right and nestle something close. Looked up at the majestic clubhouse and said F it and went for it, narrowly missed the tree and put it to two feet! Fist pump.
Didn't see but maybe 3 other golfers....saw more guys fly fishing in the river. A nice walk!
