In general, the ping G models are more "forgiving" than the I models , you could find the older new stock at saving from time to time. Wait for the pre-Christmas sale if you could wait that long.
Forgiving driver ? If you could discover one conforming or not, you will make some dough for sure. I'm still chasing the dream equipment even if I have a few sets which play well for me. The conforming restriction put limit on how a golf driver could be built. In all , the volume, the maximum dimensional measurement on face height, the length and the width of the face, but most influential is the limit of COR ( coefficient of restitution ) to .83.
Since the face of a driver is limited to a certain dimension, over the recent year the "sweet spot" had been stretched in all different shape and direction. It really depending on how most of the contact was made between the golf ball and the club face from your golf swing.
Are you looking for "forgiveness" on mishits for direction control or distance ? Cobra design is well known for stretching the sweet spot on the driver's face to the border of all six zones. Some golfers I know swear by the recent Ping G model, but they all have a different idea of a "forgiving" driver.
If you have the time, go down to your local retail store whom has a launch monitor for driver fitting, start from the free fitting ( 30 minutes or so ) then, if there are questions unanswered, you could get additional help from a professional club fitter.
A majority of the golfers I know are not just looking for distance but the feel and the sound produced by the driver. And if you are looking for improvements, it'll be a good idea to look into investing the money in golf lessons and range sessions. Find an instructor regardless of age or experience or reputation or even the local or the national ranking, whom will listen to your needs, watch you swing a few times and propose a plan to achieve your goal. Not just someone whom will talk to you only after you paid the lessons.
There should be a proposed plan to improve either your long game or your short game beyond the fundamental essentials. Don't get into the trap of purchase a series of lessons to improve the golf swing. Some golfers needs 5 minutes for adjustment some golfers are hopeless to break 80.....
Later, you will find out most the lessons on the higher level do not involve hitting buckets of range balls but to understand the game through conversations, demonstrations, practice to capture the concept and... repeat.
