Par4QC You missed my point, I think.

If golfers go low, it doesn't really have any lasting adverse effect on the world. But the ifmwe continue to lengthen courses, that could legitimately have an effect and cause a universal bad outcome.

In other words, I do think continuing to hit the ball farther is bad, but not for the same reasons that most people are considering.

My real point is/was....it is not the distances the R&A/USGA are worried about. It is score to Par. They would gladly let anyone hit the ball 450 yds., if they could only shoot 75. I must be the only one seeing this.

Let them hit as far as they can. Let them not have 1 easy shot after the drive. It is simple/easy. But they are never going to look at simple/easy.

They gave us the 460 driver, made with titanium. And they never thought it would equate to much longer drives? THEY,
R&A/USGA, have caused the distances. Instead of making new rules, rescind a few.

As far as bifurcation, many sports have bifurcation so that's not an issue either.

I'm not sure why golfers unless at the elite level really care?

Put yourself in the shoes of the ball company owners. Listen to what their bankers are saying.
Make 2 completely different balls, AND have to pay for months/years of R&D for this new ball? And there will be absolutely no profit....100% loss, on this ball, btw. It is for Pros only, and they pay for nothing. Ever.

Just how would someone make a ball, that after hit a set distance, would roll no further than XXX yards?

If you are saying the recreational golfer will pay for the changes to the rolled back ball for the elite player. Yes, I agree we the hacks pay for everything in golf. That's nothing new in society, we the masses pay for everything. In the long run it's not going to make much of a difference in cost other than everything is going up inflation wise. To me that's a discussion you could have in just about any change.

They will figure it out we'll pay for it no doubt. It's minutia 99.9% of golfers could really care about this issue IMO.

As for R&D there's a guy on Mygolfspy who worked for a ball company and says they've already been working on a reduced distance ball.

BTW, here are the two entities that are most effected by the rolled back ball. The elite player who will play this new rolled back ball and the golf fan that watches the elite players on tv or live.

It will effect the fan that loves to see huge booming drives when it's instituted but again how far is the ball going to be rolled back. No one knows. IMO it's much ado about nothing and I read thru this thread and wondered why does everyone care so much as we have no stake in this. Unless it's something to post on a golf forum cuz I am bored. LOL Just me I got other stuff to worry about. ☺

scotts33 I do think you are wrong. Yes, we will all pay for it because we are dumbasses, and like I said, no one/no companies will stick together and say "NO". They will make the balls. And they will sell the balls to US; they will only make 1 ball type. And we will be required to use them also. It is the only way the ball companies can make them.... if everyone HAS to play them. I don't see how they could afford to take the loss, nor think they can make up all that loss through price gouging.
Then again, I did say we are all dumbasses 😄. And am glad I do like Top-Flite at times.

They have set the parameters for the new ball. A certain distance + a % added in for rollout. All figured off a 125 mph swing speed. And PGA Tour average is only 113!

IF they, the USGA and R&A had done something years back when Nicklaus and others early 2000's said reel back the ball it might have made more of a difference but who can say? More distance will come from more athletic players and clubs under the same standards as used today. The sanctioning bodies now don't test COR at tourney sites and when they have selected drivers at the British when Shane Lowry won some were illegal and removed. Most say golf is a game of honor by and large that maybe true but you have Langer anchored to his chest, Reed the cheater and rules benders everywhere the game has become a game of dishonor so some how I can get an advantage. Bobby Jones would roll over in his grave. 😉

You do have to sell them. To who? IF it is just for the Pros, they do not buy balls. The only buyers I can think of in that case would be the courses where the tournaments are held, or the PGA Tour, for the practice balls/range balls. Why would anyone in the general public want to buy enough to give them a profit?

That's the thing in my mind, that will not happen. And the Pros will not lose any distance either. Except off the tee, and even then they are still going to hit past the 'rules'. And they will do the same as everyone will do with irons, use a different loft. If 160 yds. are needed, we will pull the 160 yd. club.
The only place I see the Pros losing any measurable distance would be with FW clubs. But if they keep mowing the FW/approaches short, it will be negligible.

Who knows as it is unclear/undecided. There very well may be a bifurcation.
By the way, many of the pros have balls 'tweaked' for them by the OEMs.

If they're produced, somebody will buy them, even just practice /range balls will be sold at a profit. Pros might not even get them free anymore if they don't think the advertising will make the masses buy them.

If I am reading this correctly, any competitor in an 'elite' competition will probably have to use them.
I'm sure some elite Ams probably get freebies, but think of all the qualifiers that are held. That's a lot
of conforming new golf balls. Hardly worth wasting a brain cell at this point as they are still taking
input on the distance proposal.

Just in case, I'm prepping a stock up now ball sale.. 🤑
