I'll start. Vertex AW on SK Fiber TT75R shaft. Cleveland Launcher HB 5W on UST 55 Gold R shaft.

colej Well, the hot water/ferrule trick worked like a charm.

So far, I have gotten to try it out on some of the foam balls I have and I just need to cut to length, put a grip on it, and smooth out the step from the hozel to the ferrule. I'm liking the looks of the white shaft and white ferrule.

I'd like to hear from the guys that don't use a thin layer of epoxy installing ferrules over the years how much ferrule creep you have experienced? Be honest and I am talking long term over 10+ years.

I say you will experience ferrule creep not using the epoxy bond between shaft and ID of ferrule. Just my take.

scotts33 10+ years? Gee, not many things last that long. When I worked with steel shafts, and their longer parallel tips, I usually started with the ferrules further up the shaft than their final position, and so there'd be epoxy to hold the ferrule, as I'd slide it down snug against the hosel. But it's a good 6-7 years since I've installed a steel shaft on anything but a putter. With graphite shafts and the tighter fit, I'm usually jamming the ferrule into place dry. I used OEM assembled irons the last few years, though I'm experimenting with my own build this past week, so too early to see anything. I've had a couple of drivers show a little ferrule creep, but that's been about it. The 8 iron in my OEM irons had some ferrule creep, but I pulled it and reset it.

Not sure how I would know. Clubs I've built and sold are usually out of my sight and I'd have no idea if there was ferrule creep. I CAN tell you I haven't had any in the clubs I've built for me and for local buddies.

scotts33 I have never had a ferrule creep. I don’t abrade under the ferrule. The tight fit will keep it in place. To be fair, I don’t remember the last club I haven’t disassembled within 5 years of making them.

I used to get all my ferrules from Divotmasters up there. They were perfect fitting and stayed tight; you had to heat them before you could move them up. I've still got a lot of them that I bought a few years ago, when they were selling them(cheaply) by the 100's.

I will rough up the inside, and coat with epoxy, the ferrules I get from DTG** and a couple other places. Otherwise, they go up to the 1st step; farther on non-stepped shafts. Way too big.

Another thing, I'll bet most builders overlook, is the top of the hosel. If it's not prepped/roughed up, the ferrule is going to creep.
If I get a club in that the ferrule has moved on, I immediately pull that shaft completely. Someone did a poor job of prep, and it could also be with the shaft/hosel bond, if that ferrule is creeping. 🤨

**DTG now has some really nice ferrules, but they do still carry the cheap black ones which I'm talking about; oversize for all clubs, not a good fit at all.

BTW I am talking installing ferrule with thin epoxy bond sliding ferrule up shaft with epoxy it makes the ferrule slide up shaft easier. I am not talking epoxy between top of ferrule and hosel over time that is not a fix.

I say long term without that epoxy bond between shaft and ferrule you can experience ferrule creep. It may not show up early on in club life but long term it may.

I believe the newbies to clubmaking may not understand these nuances to building good clubs.

Even if it does, it's no bid deal. I've fixed many clubs that I didn't build whose ferrules crept up the shaft. EZ fix.

scotts33 That is exactly why I use a little to "lube" the ferrule. I don't feel it's enough to rely on a ferrule to head bond.....but I may be wrong.

I've never heard that one before, there's hardly any surface area that would make a difference. IMO

I mean I have sanded the top of a hosel bore after a shaft pull job to remove any old epoxy for
a better fit....but not on a new first time build....seems a little anal.
BTW, I always use a dab of epoxy inside a roughed up ferrule.....no creepers here, just a few from the OEM builds.

I always prep the shaft a bit above the hosel and hit the inside of the ferrule as well. Then a little epoxy directly to the inside of the ferrule and so on. I've had one "epoxy failure" in my time building. It was the Juggernaut I built with the red Kuro Kage 50, back in 2014 iirc. Played it for 5-6 holes and noticed the shaft logo had moved. Didn't think much about it and finished up the round/scramble and hit it well. Pulled and reattached the next day with the same epoxy with no issues. Hammer got the head, I still have the shaft.

It's metal. Ferrule is plastic. Similar situation with inside of metal hosel and graphite shaft. You prep both of them, correct?....and they 'bond'. Take 5 secs, and buy the insurance. 😉

I have been building clubs for about 20 years. With graphite I abrade the shaft about half way up the length of the ferrule. If the ferrule is snug on a test fit I just set it in place with the club head by tapping the shaft on the floor until it seats. If the ferrule is a loose fit I just run it up the shaft past the abraded area. I install the head and as the excess epoxy oozes out of the top of the hosel I wiggle the ferrule down and twist it around on the shaft then clean up excess glue. I pretty much do the same with steel shafts. The tight ones I just tap on with the club head. The loose ones I wiggle them down like I do with graphite. I do use ferrules that are counter sunk as I think they provide for a larger area for the glue to grip. And I have to report that in 20 years I have never had one single ferrule creep up. I do need to say that I have always used Hardman company 24 hr epoxy.

scotts33 Really no ferrule creep for me. The ones I get from GW and Hireko are damn tight. When I first started making clubs, they were not so tight, so I used epoxy.

I would guess that I personally have built a lot more clubs over the years than ANY of you have goes back to 1982. Back when you had to whip a club. Personally I believe most of you have led novices down the wrong road is why I speak of this issue and others (least path of resistance). Most have said it it's disposable society and throw away. Back way when it was not and we took our skills as an art not now it's cut n ' glue. I see guys talk about heft and 5g head weight etal with no tools nor skills cuz they don't know better. It's just another way of looking at things. I just asked but has anyone had a club in their procession they built for themselves are a client in 10+ years? If not that says a lot throw away or move on for $12. ☺

The problem is, Scott, that you're in a golf forum with a lot of members with build experience who have learned a lot by trial and error and READING WHAT OTHER MEMBERS HAVE POSTED. If you think someone is wrong and is misleading the novices, I'm sure you'll point it out, and it will be read. They can choose to take your advice or toss it. Just remember- just because they don't do it like YOU do it, doesn't make them wrong......and it isn't personal. Sometimes you just have to let it go.

scotts33 Scott, by what method did you build clubs, 40 years ago? What were the 'standard' lengths of clubs then? What about lofts of irons? What material/compounds were the shafts you used? Ever hear of a gap wedge back then? How about 'approach' wedge? Remember the loft of a 'sand iron'? I could go on & on.

Times change. Methods change. So have you & yours, or you would have been out of business years ago; I know better.
And, it's always.....to each, his own.
You can, without question, build a 'perfect' set of clubs, and you surely always do for your customers.
But, I can too! And surely others here can also. But, we do not have customers, we build for ourselves, for fun, for experimenting, and for experiences.

scotts33 I have clubs in my and my friends bags that are older than 10 years, with no ferrule creep. In my case the clubs are no longer in the bag but they were for 10+. If a ferrule slides on easily, I’ll epoxy it. But the ones I get are too tight if anything. I epoxied them for years, until I didn’t.

sdandrea1 I would say that of the golf forums, Golfbuzz has the most experienced and knowledgeable builders in general. We don’t often see those ridiculous Golfwrx responses to club building questions. (I feel that I should tip my shaft 1/8 of an inch to bring spin down 🤣). We might not always agree, but most answers are well thought out and given from experience. I have been building clubs since 1995 and every day I learn something that could help me with my next build.
