Its advertising ......
No different than any OEM who charges way more for their driver vs a component driver or a ProvX versus a Kirkland ball. OEM's perpetually spout BS and false claims and yet people buy TM, PING, Callaway, etc ....no better than a good component driver but yet people still dole out $500+ for their drivers and $1000 for their irons. Are these people stupid ? Maybe if they fall for the BS claims, but more likely it is because they prefer a name brand vs some clone/copy or no name brand. Likewise with boutique gear , these people just prefer that stuff and can afford it. It's shocking how many people I see at the course playing Honma gear....Scotty Cameron putters could be the biggest fleecing on the market, yet many are happy to pay $500 to several thousand for them.
It is the same with many other items sold in the world....all about personal taste and disposable income
a $5000 Hermes handbag holds a woman's crap the same as $30 Walmart bag.
a million dollar Patek Phillipe watch tells time just like a $25 Timex.
$1000 jeans versus $20 at kmart
and so on and so forth....sometimes the quality is better, sometimes not.
PXG definitely cost more to make than a standard iron but they are sold as a boutique item for the wealthy, as is so much else. I have no issues with it and in many cases I think some people are against them and others because they are jealous and cant afford more expensive things.
there are a few guys who play PXG On the forum up here, they get mistreated because of it but they say they like the clubs, feel they help them and enjoyed the whole fitting process and what went with it in Scottsdale. Different strokes for different folks.
