By far and away, our go-to local steakhouse has been around since the prohibition. They have pictures of whiskey et al being unloaded and stored in the cellar by the Kansas City mob that controlled our market. The building is a dive on the outside and a very dated, throwback interior for patrons' dining pleasure including a jukebox coin box on the booths' tables so you can order your own tunes while you dine.
For a mere $16 you can partake of a thick-cut, lean 8oz sirloin and prices go up from there. The steaks come with a salad and choice of french fries or homemade shredded hashbrown potatoes with minced onion and green peppers grilled in butter. This venue provides bowls of gravy on the side to immerse your potatoes in and you've created a meal that prompts cardiologists to leave business cards at the register. One of the popular local micro-brews has their ales on tap so to enhance the dining experience. My favorite dinner here is the 'Steak for Two', a 32oz slab of beef sirloin grilled to order (you can challenge the grillmaster by asking for 1/2 the steak to be cooked to different degrees (rare, med-rare, medium, med well, well). and it is only $45. Three or four of us usually dine on this platter and we've still taken a doggie bag home. I've been asked, "is North Star Steakhouse still open" on my travels when a stranger asks where I'm from. It's that good.
Lone Star Steakhouse and Outback Steakhouse opened and tried to work this market - they came and went.
