Using shaft tipped to 7 iron for wedges

Heard some of you guys do this. How does it effect stiffness of the shaft? Distance? Trajectory? Feel?

obviously will be softer, create more spin and go higher.

I have to ask why would you do this ?

Wedges by nature of their higher loft and heavier weighted heads already go high and spin more.

My idea with wedges has always been to go stiffer than I use in the other clubs to Tighten dispertion and better control trajectory.

Isn't this related to what is known as "Tiger Stepping"?

not really. Tiger stepping is when you use the 8 iron shaft but a full flex stiffer. So if you use stiff in the rest of your irons you’d go with a 8 iron shaft X flex in the wedges.

Would you then tip trim your 7-8-9, in other words, the 7 trimmed to a 4; the 8 trimmed to a 5 and the 9 trimmed to a 6, to match that of the wedge??? What about no tip trim, just butt trim the irons to length??

The idea is to have more feel with your wedge(s), not match it with the rest of your irons.

Wishon used to have the High Flight wedge shaft which had a long parallel tip and looked like a regular shaft that was either untipped or not tipped very much. It was great from 40 yards and in if you wanted to float one in that landed like a butterfly. With a full swing it was pretty soft. I used to like it in my SW and LW since I never took a full swing with those clubs, but I would use a stiffer shaft in the GW.

KCee yes....diamond golf still sells these....fyi it is an Apollo Shadow steel shaft untipped!

Spuzz Curious, as I've been asked recently - What about no tip trim, just butt trim the irons to length?? What is the result with that???

I've soft stepped wedges, but not at 7i tipping. I'd say try it and see how you like it.

It depends on the shaft profile, but in general, a softer flex, and maybe grips that don't fit right.

ive got some Nippon zelos 7 shaft pulls that could work for your friend.

Spuzz Figured that about the softer flex, but didn't consider the grip fit. Have a "super senior" friend that wants me to do that with his 7-8-9 irons. I'll experiment with some "tomato stakes" I have to test the grip fit...thanks

He wants a "super senior" geezer flex - tried to talk him into a ladies flex shaft, but ego, even at 83, is strong in him, "No effin way"...Will probably go the Soft Step way - uses the 5-6-7-8-9 irons...he likes his wedges just the way they are...
