Not exactly the same thing, but I've been using the Acer XV HT's I built about a month ago. To me, they seem like the best of both worlds. No....they don't look like classic blades (a little too much offset and a little too thick in the topline), but, as I hoped, they are closer to it than many of the clone/shovel GI irons that you see. I agree that the Ping I5's and Maltby TE's are among the best "compromise irons" out there. I've played both, and IF/WHEN I get tired of what I've got, I'll most likely gravitate back to one of those two.
How are the Maltby's holding up? IIRC, mine accumulated some bag chatter over the couple of years I used them....
