What is the Hardest Golf Course you have ever played and Why

I've always remembered Waterwood National near Hunstville TX as being extremely difficult. It was an old Pete Dye design. Hard ground, loads of trees, and the infamous railroad ties everywhere. I only played there a few times in my teens, but it sticks in my brain. After some googling, it looks like Waterwood went belly up years ago, although it may be being kept alive in some fashion by the homeowners association.

I believe I posted earlier in this thread The Bull at Pinehurst Farms.....although I have not played since the new owners....they softened it some by taking out.some bunkers and doing away with some of the junk/natural long grass, etc. So inwill have.to downgrade it.

Other contenders would be Sage Run and Grey walls in the UP. Two courses in dramatic settings that are rugged beauty!

Greywalls with its twists and turns through rock outcroppimgs a d turtle back greens is amazing and could eat ones lunch if wayward. Plenty of elevation change to boot.

Sage Run is in the middle of a drumlin, firm, fast and no let up. Some of the most dramatic holes I've ever played with two par threes that play straight up a hill, and two drivable par 4,s that also play significantly uphill. Well bunkered off the tee and the greens/surrounds. Dramatic elevation change. Blonde you get last the fairway and first cut its different ey if you get a good lie as its the native areas that can be bare or in between clumbs of grass.

1st off, those courses sound Stephen Kingish and oddly fun to me.

2nd, what is a drumlin?

Glacial formation/essentially a big long hill or ridge. They utilized it quite well in the design. There are a few vantage points where it feels like you can see miles and miles of forrest. It doesn't seem possible as you aren't up very high, but then there is the view!

Two of mf my favorite courses. That along with Lawsonia Links and Giants Ridge Quarry. Also both dramatic setting.for golf, all in different ways!

Bayside in Delaware was really tough. 76.4/148. It is a Jack Nicklaus course.

Inverness Club, Toledo, Ohio, about 3 weeks before the 1979 US Open.

Somebody mentioned Mike Strantz much earlier in this thread. Mike and I worked at the same golf course when he was a high school kid. By 1979, he was a Turf Grass Management student at Michigan State, and got a summer
internship at Inverness. (BTW, he helped plant the famous "Hinkle Tree" there during the Open) Anyway, he
got our greenskeeper, the assistant pro and me out there to play before the Open.

I remember the rough was a bitch, and the greens were faster than hell, and felt lucky that I broke 90! As a
matter of fact Inverness just was awarded another US Open in 2045, when I'll be 100, LOL!!!

Hardest course=Austin Country Club

Why?=the question I asked myself about 5 or 6 holes in. Lots of pretty views, lots of ugly rock formations that seemed to attract my Dunlap LOCOs.

Lived in Austin for 4 years, but never got to play there. Jimmy Clay municipal was my course.

Toughest course i have ever played is La Purisima golf course.
