About 4 years ago we had one move through our neighborhood in the middle of the night. It didn't do much damage luckily, destroyed a few barns and took a few roofs off a couple other barns, it wasn't a huge tornado. Thankfully it had moved through mostly open farmland.
So it's about 2:30 in the morning, and I'm suddenly feeling our house start to vibrate... I looked outside and the street sign looked like it was bent over double... no sooner than the thought hit me to get the family and the dogs downstairs, it was over.
The national weather service couldn't verify that it was a tornado, since it was in the middle of the night and no one actually saw it. But it had to be... our home was about 1000 yards away from the path, so it was definitely more than just strong direct-line winds.
Very scary couple of seconds. Fortunately we don't get too many of them around these parts.
