Got to play with them on Thurs here in VA in my weekly Stabelford. They treated me well - broke 80 and won $22 for 2nd place. I don't think I'll get the 5i, though......... 8*)
Callaway Steelhead Xr, anyone ?
Could always get a gmax 5 iron Stevie.
Had a chance to swing by our local golf store.
Took a peak at this steelhead Xr model. All I can say is, the head looked huge comparing to the X14 PS.
I'm certain it's more forgiving. I just never had success with these larger iron heads. Even the Ping Zing would dwarf next to the Xr.

And my prediction is you're going to love it. Just remember if you set it to +.6 or +1 you'll close the face and -.6 and - 1 will open the face. I finally settled on my 12* at the +.6 setting. When I'm on I can hit a nice consistent high draw at that setting. I find it as long or longer, plus extremely forgiving on miss hits than any other driver.
I have it on +1 - performed very well today. I am not fond of the sound, tho.

Did you get the 10 or 12 degree ? The sound quickly dissipates as you see your drives fly down the fairway.

I got the 10, set to 11 (+1). This driver flew as straight and as long as my Adams Blue and Callaway BB V Series. It just sounds different. No Holy Grail, but after all my experiments, I am sure there isn't one. 8*)

Does the setting at 11 degree go high enough? I think you'll find the forgiveness a tad better. At the time the G30 was the most forgiving driver out there. The G driver is supposed to even be slightly more forgiving.
Yep - I get the right trajectory for my clubhead speed.

It doesn't seem as many have hit the Steelhead XR. He is my experience per trackman.
PING g25 7I 1/4" over standard w/DG XP s300 vs Callaway Steelhead XR 7I w/Stepless XP95 s300 2* up.
Steelhead XR is 14.7 yds longer. No one should be shocked as the lofts compare more closely to my g25 6I. Ready for the shocker? The Callaway Steelhead Xr had more spin than my g25. That's right.
I hit the Steelhead higher and longer with MORE spin despite the reduced loft. The G25 were fitted to me near the time of release so I was not shocked that my fitted g25 dispersion was tighter. That stated, the Steelhead XR was going just left of center but not by much. The shop only had 2* up in Steelhead and that's too much. I believe a properly fit set of Steelhead Xr's would solve that issue.
I very very likely will make this transition once I move a few more items.

I looked at them yesterday at a shop. I held one next to a Cally XR. The Steelhead has less offset, a narrower sole and looks a little longer from heel to toe than the XR. A player's cavity back, maybe? I have not hit one, no.

Callaway is becoming the new TaylorMade as far as product cycle intervals and numerous model offerings. It's hard to keep track and differentiate between all the clubs they have to offer.
This is what I like about PING. They offer 4 different irons for each level of golfer (Blades, I, G, GMax). They offer 3 different fairway woods (G, G Sf Tec, Stretch). Hybrids are G and the Crossover. Drivers are G, G Sf Tec and LS Tec. Very easy to differentiate between the clubs.
Take it down to 9 degrees, ball way up, wider stance aim down the right rough line....boom.

Very likely that the lighter weight is increasing swing speed. I walked in to the local shop and they had a used set of Steelhead Xr's w/xp95 in r300, standard lie. I almost walked out with them but I left them there. They simp,y go too much left for me. They also had a set of cf16 Apexes with a kbs vtour 90. Almost as long but no lefts.
I think I like the cf16 better but they are way too expensive and I still think the Steelheads with the correct shaft would be a winner,
