sdandrea1 I play 46-46 1/2" drivers. Keep in mind, you are not going to be increasing your SS all that much because of the length, so accuracy should not diminish as much as you think. In fact, it is the reason I play that length, better accuracy. BUT, I built it and took it to the course and played it. Every round, never giving up. Probably 99% of people who try a longer driver will give up after a couple 'range' sessions. That won't show you squat! Conditions and balls of the range are a completely different world than the course. Put it in the bag and go play, leaving your normal driver at home .
I started with 48" and finally settled on what I now use. I use regular weight heads, sometimes heavier, and normal weight shafts/grips. Tried the featherweight components, but that does nothing but throw off the swing, diminishing accuracy.
It's not going to work for everyone, but if it's given proper chances, on course, it can work for a lot. There is the mental aspect to it; it can't be feared or it will fail. Every time.
I've experimented with the longer fw clubs also. As stated elsewhere in this thread, lie angle is the determining factor. And the accuracy did suffer.
Hybrids can be made longer and work fine, but the length is also determined by lie angle.
Lie angle of heads, although stated to be much the same from company-company, will/do vary in reality.
