That's the issue for some on tight lies in fairway the keel sole can be off putting. For those that take a divot with their fairways on tight lies it's not much of a deal for those that hit behind the ball "fat" it's an issue. ☺

ode Most certainly. Basically a chipper but more! Has 27* loft at 36" length. Works great out of trouble under tree branches, rough, etc. I mostly use it to bump and run 75 yds in. A versatile little club, I can hit 120 yds full bore. The shape of the head is a dead knock off of my beloved Hogan Radials. A low muscle back moderately wide soled. I wouldn't be intimidated to use it on a short par 3 either for moderate height flight. Remember, it will run!

Hickorygolf59 that's great.....will be on the lookout for one/similar for my pops. I have fond memories of using a chipper when I first got into the game as a kid, it was so easy to use....and I was dumb enough to do things like hit putter off the tee and that chipper was fun to hit from the fwy! The scrambler sounds like a more versatile chipper!

Some pictures and specs of PGA Scrambler club. Some are on ebay now and also a framable advertising piece describing its virture exactly for trouble and chipping. "Flite like a quail, runs like a rabbit". Great minimalist multi function club. Apparently debuted in 1964.

My dad had one of the2 face chippers back in the 60s, maybe earlier. He was deadly with it, even used it out of bunkers with low lips, I think I have it somewhere.

That might work well as a good versatile club for the short game and intermediate recovery shots. I might head off to see if I can locate it.

Martee Great! I use mine for trouble shots but on a large green I might be tempted to chip. Use a Vokey 50* @ green side fringe.

I have an old Master Grip 396PS designed by Pat Simmons of Alien Wedge lore. In a Minimalist bag one could carry one of these for 100 and in, one wedge and your other clubs and even cut down more on clubs used. Once you get good with a specialty club for various shots you need even less. I can use it hinging hands for longer higher shots and like a putter locked wrists for chipping. All is all even for a purist these specialty clubs for hackers are more accurate. I may try it this spring to strip down amount of clubs to 6.

BTW bunkers on muni courses I play in general are hard packed and terrible sand so I chip out of them now the 396PS is probably as good on those kind of shots except where you need to elevate over a high lip.

scotts33 Nice! I have a Master Grip strong 3 wood 13* I play on occasion. The heavy weight helps me groove swinging under when I need a tune up.

Yep I get it. Buzzer's just need to know how the sole configures. Sole/turf interaction IMO is the first fitting factor to include.

To cut down on clubs for me I use at times a Swing Science FC-One A 3 wood @43" set at 17 deg. off the tee and also good off the fairway. Carry is just a bit shorter than a driver when you are 90 mph and below driver carry is negated hence 3/4 woods off tee and first club off fairway can be one in the same plus they are more accurate.

Thoughts.....it's working for me. Low 80's Senior Tees 5500 yds.

KCee I love the 3 club challenge, I have noticed, most who take a putter end up closer to the top of the leaderboard. Drive for show, putt for dough, there’s a lot of strokes to be lost on the green.

I did one where a decently struck hybrid left me a 7 iron or less in on most holes and I had no faith in anything around the green but my wedge at the time, so I took that. Did ok, but the putting was a struggle, I missed 4 or 5 that are pretty much automatic with a putter. It’s so hard to choose just 3.

The last 3 club tournament I played in 9 of the top 10 guys all had putters.

azgreg No reason not to par the round yesterday except kept missing putts 2" right of holes. Putting is King and I need to practice up. Amazingly it is the area I have practiced very little to none.

Main issue I run into is having the correct loft/club for par 3's.
