Tee Off was 35* with 5 mph wind. Took my Updated Minimalist 5 club bag, down from the 8 club. The changes came about after reading a number of posts here. The new bag for today was a 4w, 5h, 8i, PW and Putter. The course played @ 5600 yds. I manage my best round of golf for the year. 78 (40/38).
The changes in the bag composition was due to:
Essentially a minimalist golfer needs to Master 4 shots (?). Tee Shot, Approach Shot (150 to 100 yds), the Wedge & the Putter. Sounds pretty simple.
The second post defined an approach to determine what tees should be played. The Tee shot on Par 4s should leave an approach shot of 150 yards or less on average.
My interpretation was: For any Tee shot on Par 4s that didn't get inside the Approach Zone, I played it for a bogey and hoped to get an up-n-down for a par. On Par 3s that were out of my range for the clubs I carried, again I played it for a bogey and hoped to get up-n-down for a par. On Par 5s I followed the same thinking but really expected to hit the greens in regulation, if not, then it was an up-n-down.,
Reality is the initial paper exercise and the practical execution is different given the uphill/downhill/sidehill lies.
Today my target goal was 41/41 for an 82. Clearly I did better with several up-n-downs and more important NO STUPID SHOTS, Those shots that when not executed well create more opportunities to lose strokes to par.
Tomorrow I intend to see what I can do to have more success with the 5h or a replacement, 8 shots with only 2 finding their target. I wanted to use the 5 iron but my swing just can't get the ball out of the dormant Bermuda rough with the same distance as the 5h or 4h. Also I am anxious to see what score I can post.
