Gatorman sdandrea1 What is your setup with these 8 irons, and do you play up tees? I am 74 now so I play 5300 yards
sdandrea1 Gatorman What is your setup with these 8 irons, and do you play up tees? I am 74 now so I play 5300 yards 5300 to 5600 (max) tees. Typically driver, 6h, 8i, 9i, W, GW, SW, putter. If I play 9 clubs, I'll add a FW metal (5w or 7w).
Tinker Joined a club a month ago that gives me the rest of this year and next year. I play now with my son in law and his 30 something buddies. The course is not super tough but we play the regular tees at 6400 yards. I can’t seem to keep it down to 14 clubs. 200 to 225 yard drives still leave me a good poke to get home in regulation. I carry a 3 wood, 5 wood, hybrid and 3,4 iron and sometimes use them all. I still beat these guys but it’s a lot of work.
Eguller Hickorygolf59 (12D, 3W, 5W, 6I, 8I,50,Putter) Shoot low to mid 80's. I'm just curious - why not a 7w instead of the 5w ? Most hit the 7w close to the 5w in my experience. And, is the 50* your sand club for the most part ? Thanks.
Hickorygolf59 The 5W I play is a Louisville Golf persimmon and that club just sets up so well for me. I love playing it mainly on par fives. Confidence for 160-170 yd's with that club. Yes, the 50* is played out of traps or monkey grass, or lofting up hills close to green.
Eguller Still rockin' the Minimalist bag & probably will if I get to play any more this Winter. Very convenient. But, I do miss my 20+ club bag. 😉
Eguller sdandrea1 I was semi kidding on the 20+, but 13 would probably be my optimum bag - push come to shove.
sdandrea1 Shot 82 today and had a triple bogey and at least 4 chunks with short irons. Driver, Perfect Club, 7i, 9i, AW, SW, 2Ball.

sdandrea1 DonM Do the chunks make you blame yourself or the club fit? Myself......always. I know better.
KCee Eguller Real minimalist golf here - 22* and winds at 15-25 mph Less clubs, but more layers! Now I feel like I can't complain that it's about + 25 here.....I mean I'll still complain, but not to you.
DonM sdandrea1 I disagree, only because you are a good enough golfer that you aren't going to start chunking for no good reason. Different clubs cause different swing reactions.

Don, the list of shit I do for no good reason is too long to show you. 😂 I attribute my poor play to physical and mental (focus) issues. I'm an adapter. I usually figure a way to score well with whatever is in my bag. When the chunks and thins start, it's always either in my head, body or both. I have never been a consistent ball striker off the turf and I'm still learning to deal with loss of flexibility in my neck and back. I'll sort it out. Been here before. When my swing is on, I can hit nearly any club decently.
DonM sdandrea1 Even given all that, I stand by my statement. Different clubs create different swing reactions. We can all adapt, some more than others. I'm sure you're a lot better than I am at that. But the club does matter when the adaptation fails. I play a lot better with a club that enhances my swing than with one I have to adapt to. But we can agree to disagree! 🙂
Hickorygolf59 sdandrea1 See my "Jay Golden hammer swing comment" Not to be confused with the infomercial blonde haired guy selling clubs!
sdandrea1 DonM . I play a lot better with a club that enhances my swing than with one I have to adapt to. I get your point. I really think the biggest factor on that is heft/overall weight.....to me anyway. A lighter or heavier club probably has an effect on path.

If your goal is to play your best you can’t use a different set of irons every day of the week. You can adapt during the round and maybe play well…I’ve done it when I rent clubs on vacation but you can’t be at your best using different flexes and weights everyday. You’ll learn nothing about if that “flavor of the day” works for you or not. If your goal is to just try a different set everyday…have at it
Hickorygolf59 DonM Clubs are a very individual thing. Some just set up better to you than others. Loft, lie, design, appeal to the eye at address, etc. I can definitely tell the difference playing quality made clubs vs. cheapies.

Tinker sdandrea1 chunked, thin shots from under 50 yards in are my bugaboo. I have never mastered chipping . I put an old Macgregor syncrolite sand wedge in the bag and it helps a lot. It feels like a flyswater but I found I can take a bigger swing and keep it under control. Not great in the sand but I haven’t played in decent sand for a while.
